Metropolitan Opera Gala Classical Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) A NIGHT TO REMEMBER This is a brilliant record of highlights taken from a huge operatic concert at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972 before Levine's "artistic" control almost ran the institution aground in a sea of self-indulgence. A Night of Home Runs Here is a small sample of what things were like in 1972. The performances on this recording are consistantly brilliant, with the exeption of Leontyne Price who was not in good voice that night. Richard Tucker and Robert Merrill give a hellfire and thunder rendition of their duet from LA FORZA DEL DESTION, for example. The prize for over the top entertainment goes to Birgit Nilsson. Karl Bohm was able to let the orchestra howl and bray without fear of drowning her huge voice. Miss Nilsson's final scene from SALOME is far and away the most thrilling and bloodcurdling rendition of the piece that I have ever heard. If you only have this recording to judge by you might say that she was cra
wling aroung the stage in delirium. I saw the film of highligths from the concert, which was made for a television special, during
which she stood as still and solid as an oak made all the drama with her voice, and this after 1:00 a.m. at the very end of the concert! The ovation which came end of this started building like a wave during the last chords of the orchestra and then swelled into a wall of cheering which, on the recording sounds like ten times the 4,000 or so people in the auditorium. In so many words, this is fun. Submitted by Gregory (Birmingham. Alabama, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$11.75 The gleaming smile in the cover shot belongs to a young mezzo-soprano coasting at the top of her game, thrilled at the chance to show off in the 400-year-old Teatro Olimpico in Vicenze. The cheers interspersed throughout this June 1998 concert are her adoring fellow Italians. Count yourself lucky to be able to join them and Cecilia Bartoli with a recording that faithfully reflects the scrumptious range of both her voice and emotional dynamics.
Within the first three selections by Caccini, Bartoli displays crystal-clear diction, from a warm mezzo lower range all the way up to the gentle, airy tones at the top of her soprano. She unleashes a potent battery of coloratura techniques in the Vivaldi aria. The role of accompaniment passes from the lively Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca to tasteful pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, as Bartoli proceeds to feature impressive, if unseen, characterizations: the folksiness of the Viardot, the low darkness of Rossini's Zelmira. A similar spirit pervades the encores as well, with the androgynous ardor of Mozart's Cherubino and the almost Carmen Mirandaesque zest of the contemporary piece by Montsalvatge. This is a bounty of Bartoli.

$14.39 In this humid, atmospheric film noir, a sweltering summer in south Florida sets the stage for a dark romance between an attorney and a beautiful woman as they plot her wealthy husband's early demise. Mickey Rourke's debut as an arson expert on parole is convincing and the script by Kasdan is dazzlingly treacherous.
William Hurt and Kathleen Turner strike sparks in Lawrence Kasdan's Body Heat, a sexy, haunting tale of desire and skullduggery that echoes 1940s film noirs but is charged with an energy and passion that could only flare in the '80s. Aided by a sultry John Barry score, Kasdan's assured directorial debut foreshadowed the emotional textures he would bring to later films The Big Chill, The Accidental Tourist and Grand Canyon. Sit back and bask in this contemporary classic's wicked warmth.

$9.69 Forest Whitaker delivers a ferociously commanding performance as bloodthirsty Ugandan president Idi Amin in Kevin MacDonald's THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. Adapted from the novel by Giles Foden, the film recounts Amin's horrific reign through the eyes of a fictional character, Nick Garrigan (James McAvoy), a young doctor from Scotland who travels to Uganda hoping to do some good. Nick is more sanguine about new president Amin than is his counterpart Sarah Merrit (Gillian Armstrong), whose experience causes her to be skeptical of Amin's bombastic declarations. After an automobile accident, Nick is called in to treat the president's wounds. His authoritative behavior impresses Amin, who charms Nick into becoming his personal physician. Nick embraces his newfound life of luxury, but he is unable to grasp the reality of the situation. When he does finally realize the atrocities Amin is inflicting upon his people (and is also capable of inflicting on Nick), the terrified doctor tries to make a frantic escape before it's too late.
MacDonald, director of the acclaimed documentaries ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER and TOUCHING THE VOID, makes a startlingly assured transition into fictional filmmaking with THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. Working with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (THE CELEBRATION) and editor Justine Wright, MacDonald brings 1970s Uganda to pulsating life, perfectly recreating that tumultuous era. But ultimately the film belongs to Whitaker: as he shifts from charming to maniacal in the space of a short, unexpected breath, he infuses Amin with startling humanity.
Forest Whitaker, James McAvoy, Kerry Washington, and Gillian Anderson star. Extras include director's commentary, 7 deleted scenes, Idi Amin documentary, and more.
