Originally released in 1967. With dazzling playing on Bob Dylans 'Just Like A Woman'. 'I Wish You Love' and 'The Holy Land', David Newman reaches new heights on his first recorded album after leaving the Ray Charles band. 2002.
Personnel: David Newman (tenor saxophone, flute); Kossie Gardner (organ); Tod Dunbar (guitar); Milt Turner (drums). Originally released on Atlantic (1489). Includes liner notes by Alvin Baxter. The House of David was David "Fathead" Newman's comeback album of sorts, marking his first release after the end of his association with Ray Charles and a few years spent with his family in his hometown of Dallas. Organist Kossie Gardner, guitarist Ted Dunbar, and drummer Milt Turner support Newman's gritty "Texas tenor" sound, which captures the straightforwardness of R&B pop and the improvisational elements of jazz. Newman plays the flute on the spunky "Miss Minnie," but one of the most interesting songs on the album is the untypical rendition of a Bob Dylan tune, "Just Like a Woman." the artist's warm tenor lifts this song to angelic heights, and it's fathomed that he had only heard the song a few times before laying down this recording. Other standouts on the album include the Cedar Walton penned closer, "The Holy Land," and the original blues numbers such as the title track and "New Blues." This album boils with inventive hooks and the soulful combination of organ and guitar that would become more pop-oriented on subsequent Newman recordings. ~ Jeff Schwachter Recorded after a period of relative quiet for saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman, HOUSE OF DAVID is a very inspired release. On this 1967 record, Newman is matched up with an organ trio and together the band plays a blend of hard bop and soul jazz. Certain tracks are undeniably dated, but not in a negative way. For example, the rock-inflected numbers "One Room Paradise" and "Miss Minnie" both scream late-1960s funk, but this quality fits the tunes wonderfully. Elsewhere, Newman's thoughtful cover of the classic Bob Dylan song "Just Like a Woman" proves to be a standout. HOUSE OF DAVID begins with the reflective ballad "I Wish You Love," featuring a lengthy tenor solo from Newman. Here his improvisational skills are not only expressive, but unique; although one can hear echoes of Lester Young and James Moody in his solo, these influences have been expertly filtered through Newman's own creative voice.

This CD comes packaged with an exclusive DVD. CD contains bonus DVD. Lillix is the musical equivalent of a vintage rock & roll T-shirt, recycled and re-tailored to fit the smooth contours of a fashion model's figure. Guitarist Tasha Ray-Evin, bassist Louise Burns, keyboardist Lacey-Lee Evin, and drummer Kim Urhahn are accomplished musicians, and the sisters Evin and Burns each own strong singing voices. But no matter how many times they drop impressive classic rock names like Queen, Supertramp, or even Thin Lizzy in answer to interviewers' questions of influence, there's no getting around the fact that their Maverick debut, Falling Uphill, is a soft-focus yawner. In actuality, Lillix's closest reference is likely the lush, radio-ready pop of the Bangles. ...

| | Art Of Dying CD (2008)
House Of David
$10.19 Hard work, determination, focus and a relentless passion for music are what define the Art of Dying. The Vancouver based five-piece rock act has already established a dedicated fan base, toured relentlessly and is now setting its sights on the global market. The band first entered the music scene in 2005, when Jonny Hetherington (vocals) and Greg Bradley (guitar), formerly of Sunlikestar, stepped into the studio with producer Darryl Rhompf (Trapt, Chevelle). With the help of Rhompf, the band took their creative energies into a new direction. The studio sessions drew upon a wide range of exciting musical influences while keeping their sonic approach heavy, straightforward and ready for mass audience appeal. The self-titled debut album was mixed by industry heavy-hitters Dean Maher (Slayer, Bryan Adams, Trapt) and Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Aerosmith, Hedley). Outside of the core members of Jonny and Greg, Art Of Dying has always had a cast of revolving players. In 2008, an exciting line up has formed that includes Tavis Stanley (guitar) and Cale Gontier (bass) from legendary Canadian rock outfit Thornley, and Jeff Brown (drums). In 2006, Art of Dying joined South African rockers Seether on their UK tour and a tight bond was formed. Earlier this year, with the birth of a new song, “Die Trying”, Jonny and Greg asked Shaun Morgan, lead singer for Seether, to be featured on the track and they didn’t need to ask twice. Together they recorded the duet and early industry response has been beyond the band’s wildest expectations. Respected radio veteran Derm Carnduff (Progarm Director of Y108, Hamilton)-, calls it a "home-run grand slam that will take this band to the next level". The song will be used on a future release. The resulting songs on the self titled debut album is music that unites fans by addressing issues of loss, love, and self-examination, while trying to make sense of the world. A mix of powerful vocals, tight guitar and hard rock beats, it is a sound that hits you hard. The standout single “Get Through This” is one for the rock-lovers, a darkly charged anthem, while “I Will Be There” showcases the bands softer side.Since recording the album, Art Of Dying has torn up stages all over the UK, Canada and the United States. They have rocked with some of the world’s biggest artists, including Tool, Deftones, My Chemical Romance, Staind, Our Lady Peace, Hinder, Papa Roach and AFI. Art Of Dying was the main support act for Seether on their 2006 UK tour and for Saliva on their 2007 Canadian Tour. In 2008, Dan Donegan, guitarist for hard rockers Disturbed and personal fan of the band, came ...
