Less than a year after the U.K. wing of Mercury issued The Greatest Hit, the Spectrum label followed up with The Collection, yet another overview of the Teardrop Explodes' brief lifespan. The greatest (albeit shoddy) advantage this mid-line disc holds over The Greatest Hit is the track count, as it has three more songs. The overlap between the two -- five songs -- is surprisingly unsubstantial when considering that the band only released two studio albums during its existence. As a result, the two compilations provide rather different looks at the band, so if you're deciding between them for a beginning route into the band, it's a crapshoot. The Collection misfires with the exclusion of "Ha Ha I'm Drowning," "Reward," "Sleeping Gas," and "You Disappear From View." However, it does include the incredibly bizarre and bizarrely incredible "Bouncing Babies," which Mercury failed to include on The Greatest Hit. Still, the best place to go first with the band is either Mercury's great 2001 remaster of Kilimanjaro or the U.S.-distributed Kilimanjaro/Wilder two-fer. ~ Andy Kellman

$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. ...

| | Cookie Sweat-Soaked And Satisfied CD (2002) (Import) Belgium
Collection music CDs
$13.49 "If you ask me, and who else could you ask, really? The Holy Trinity of Super Rock is Cracktorch, the Lanternjack and Cookie. End of fuckin' story, citizen. But while the other two play 70's fueled power rock and dive bombing sleaze metal respectively, Cookie lay on plenty of both and slather a healthy serving of raunchy honky tonk over the whole mess like lumpy gravy, as well. Sabrina RockArena belts out her tales of whiskey and sin like an innocent, wide eyed country crooner that was waylaid by evil punk and rollers and found that she actually liked slutty guitars and songs about fucking, so she stayed, dyed her hair blue, and joined the party.I first heard an advance of "Sweat Soaked and Satisfied" last summer when my day job consisted of cruising around town in brand new convertibles, and every single time I had it blasting in the mean machine, somebody would ask me what this amazing band I was listening to was. I always told them Motley Crue for safety's sake. You, I'm telling the truth to. If you dig the Supersuckers or Elvis Presley, you're gonna dig Cookie. If you're into Kris Kristofferson or the New York Loose, you're gonna adore Cookie. If AC/DC, Johnny Cash, Tex and the Horseheads, Joan Jett, Eddie Cochran, fuck, if you dig rock and roll in any form (not to mention sex, cars, and dancin'), then you are going to fall madly in love with Cookie, I guarantee it."Ken McIntyre, The Sleazegrinder"Highway Star" is one of the best covers I've heard since Antiseen's cover of "Hellstomper. " If you like driving guitars, sexy female vocals, pumping bass lines and powerful drums, then you'll love this CD. Plus, how can anyone hate a band that gives props to all the twenty dollar hookers of the world."Zero Magazine, Jason Pepe"Do you hate people who say "You go, girl"? Spit on insecure femmes who talk about their inner goddesses? Have you been yearning for the sonic equivalent of a shot of adrenaline straight into the heart? But from a tough-ass rocker-chick frontwoman instead of a greasy guy? Me, too. This CD (Sweat Soaked and Satisfied) holds the answers."3.5 out of 4Jane Magazine, Esther Haynes"Cookie, the trio from Seattle, has restored my faith in the local music scene. No... Really. Their new CD "Sweat Soaked & Satisfied" is that fucking good! Ranging from balls out rockers, heartfelt rockabilly ballads and punk rawk, there is more variety and fun here than most bands put out in a career. I could go on and on about how great this CD is, but know one thing: I get a lot of music for review and rarely does a CD actually stay ...
