THIS SIDE won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
"Smoothie Song" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
When they first made their nationwide splash with their 2000 debut album, teen bluegrass group Nickel Creek were one of the biggest mainstream crossovers since their producer/mentor Alison Krauss, successfully modernizing their tradition-conscious genre. The follow-up THIS SIDE finds the trio largely moving away from bluegrass altogether, though retaining the same spare acoustic instrumentation. A straight-ahead cover of alt-rock legends Pavement's "Spit on a Stranger" offers the first clue that this isn't exactly Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys. Nickel Creek doesn't need to look to outside material for genre exploration, though. "Green and Gray" seems to bear a debt to the Dave Matthews Band (or at least John Mayer), while "Should've Known Better" is in a hip-hop-inflected R&B mode, and the title track could be a gentler moment from the archives of Tonic or Third Eye Blind. There are a few tracks sprinkled throughout the album that nod to the band's beginnings, and in these (particularly the evocative version of the traditional "House Carpenter" and the sprightly instrumental opener "Smoothie Song") a possible future for bluegrass may be glimpsed.

Nickel Creek This Side Songs This Side Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews I've heard better I don't know whats up with nickel creek. This cd just crossed the line with me, with the acception of 1 or 2 songs that i can listen to. Sounds like most of their fans are going to be potheads. Maybe they can make sence of it. Progressive meets Blue Grass Do not set your expectations for this release based off the first release. I don't believe this release was produced by Allison Kraus and the "flavor" of the music shows it. If you are looking for the same traditional straight forward harmonic bluegrass of the first release you will only find hints of it here; Instead you will find a progressive bluegrass release where it is obvious the performers are exploring avenues of their own. great step forward this record was a greatstep forward for Nickel Creek and is certainly worth the money. it balanced their love of bluegrass with their love of rock (the beautiful Pavement cover, "Spit On A Stranger" shows they listen to more than bluegrass)
since this albums elease the 3 members have gone on to form Mutual Admiration Society with former Toad The Wet Sprocket singer/guitarist Glen Phillips. their self ittled release is beautiful.
I look forward to Nickel Creek's upcoming work, all 3 members have solo albums on the way (With Sean and Chris' being more in a pop/rock vein) and the new Nickel Creek record in 2005 will be great (produced by the legendary pop master Jon Brion)
I expect that to be more like Bluegrass meets the beatles Submitted by Carrick (Virginia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Three listens and you're hooked into a new experience in music. This is not top 40, nor traditional bluegrass, but it is special on its own. Inventive and melodic with a little bit of adrenaline added. Quality blend of both instruments and vocals makes for a very enjoyable listen. After a few listens you're acclimated, hooked and singing along. Still fresh after 9 months of listening. A fun listen for sure. | | Bobby Barnett American Heroes/Western Legends CD (1997) (Import) Germany
This Side CD music
$24.39 Bear Family's 1997 release American Heroes contains the entirety of Bobby Barnett's two concept albums about the history of the American West: 1975's Heroes, History and Heritage of Oklahoma and its 1985 sequel, which cast its sights to the entire West, not settling for just Oklahoma. Unlike nearly every Bear Family set, this plays a little fast and loose with the historical facts (kind of ironic considering the nature of the set), sequencing the two albums nearly interchangeably and not giving indication of the original track order (the origin of the 27 tracks is delineated on the back cover, along with the supporting musicians); the booklet explains the stories of the songs and prints the lyrics, but gives little history on Barnett or these albums. So, the focus is on the history, the myths, and the heritage of the West and Oklahoma in particular, and while it may have been better to have the two albums presented as originally released, ...
