If you were to compare the J. Geils Band's 1970 self-titled debut to their final album with singer Peter Wolf, 1981's FREEZE FRAME, you could easily be fooled into thinking they were two completely different bands. Although they'd later become best known for chart-storming pop-rock, the J. Geils Band started out as a straight-ahead blues-rock band, much like their mentors the Rolling Stones and their peers ZZ Top and Aerosmith.
J. Geils's debut has a fun, loose, and very rootsy feel, not far from how the band sounded on the concert stage early on. The choice of covers speaks volumes about the group's influences, as treatments of John Lee Hooker's "It Serves You Right to Suffer" and Albert Collins's "Sno-Cone" are served up with downhome, bluesy fervor. But there are some fine original compositions too, like the Stax/Booker T. sounds of "Ice Breaker (For the Big 'M')," and the FM radio-ready "Hard Drivin' Man." If the goal of this self-titled debut album by Desmond Child & Rouge was to give the listener a bittersweet tour of New York's mean streets, they did a marvelous job. This album paints a vivid picture of urban life, and the group brilliantly captures the highs and lows of life in the big city. Both musically and lyrically, this album is a gem. The group's soul-influenced style of pop/rock is quite distinctive, and the characters in Child's songs are so New York inspired that some reviewers compared him to Billy Joel. Jim is a talented multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter who has assimilated a broad palette of musical idioms throughout his life of incurable musical addiction. Primarily a stringed instrument specialist (acoustic, electric and square-neck Resophonic guitar, banjo, mandolin, electric and acoustic bass), he also shines as a keyboardist, harmonica player and has versatile vocal abilities. As a songwriter and arranger, he has an uncanny ability to combine facets of dissimilar musical genres into new and interesting (and sometimes slightly askew) song forms and directions. If you enjoy your Rock and Roll with a taste of Western Swing or would like to explore a bit of "Psychedelic Do-Whop Blues", Jim Skinner and his music are the place to start! Jim's music is recorded at his home studio in Beautiful Rural Eastern Oklahoma (Westville) with Mr. Skinner presiding as the engineer and producer.
