$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more ...

Because Of Bechet music CDs
$8.79 This compilation in Verve's laudable Jazz in Paris reissue series features two separate soundtracks of original music. The first features a dozen works by French saxophonist Barney Wilen, written for Edouard Molinaro's Un Témoin dans la Ville, with a quintet consisting of Kenny Dorham, Duke Jordan, Kenny Clarke, and bassist Paul Rovere. While many of the pieces were only heard as musical fragments in the film, and several of them are little more than a brief chorus or two in recorded form, ...
| | Jack Ingram Live At Billy Bob's Texas CD (2003)
Because Of Bechet songs
$11.89 Modern day outlaw Jack Ingram brought his Beat Up Ford band to Billy Bob's Texas earlier in 2003 and left with a burning, rowdy, unruly set on tape. For those who've never encountered Ingram and his band live, this document is as solid as it gets. It's rough, raw, and outta control. Included are 15 tracks, most of which are Ingram standards such as his signature tune, "Beat Up Ford," "Red, White & Blues," "Nothing to Gain," "Ghost of a Man," "She Don't Love You," and "Run to Me," of course. In addition, there are a few stellar covers included such as the Joe Maphis classic "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)" and a set-ending stunner in the form of Waylon Jennings' "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way." Ingram's manner of relating to an audience has nothing to do with corny jokes, or self-styled anthems geared to get response from a drunken crowd. His delivery is honest, to the punch, and completely inside his lyrics. His writing, while far from elegant, nonetheless conveys the stories ...

| | Greg Duncan Unveiled CD (2007)
Because Of Bechet songs
$14.79 Bandleader Greg Duncan spent some time touring with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and in ways it shows here on his debut recording. While he's working in a quintet for Unveiled, and on modern compositions, there's a definite classic big-band sound. The players here -- Duncan on trumpet, Dan Nicholson on sax, and Marcin Fahmy, Jon Deitemeyer, and Jeff Greene as the rhythm section -- all play their parts in a cohesive manner, never straying too far from one another's beat and mood. However, what sets the group apart from the classic big bands (such as Glenn Miller's) is the bandmembers' tendency to follow one another off to the stratosphere with more intricate and more wailing solos, higher-intensity melodies, and movement throughout the instrument range. The band sounds like a classic big band; the band sounds like a modern small combo. The tone is relaxed; the tone is exciting. While the rhythm section plays out an excellent backdrop, the stars here are clearly the horns, with Duncan and Nicholson taking turns running through their respective solos, ...
