This low-priced ten-track sampler is a loss-leader introduction to the catalog of Tradition Records, the blues reissue arm of Rykodisc. It's a solid selection of early blues recordings, focusing on vintage acoustic blues performances like Lightnin' Hopkins' flood narrative "Backwater Blues" and a classic rendition of Sonny Terry's "Rock Me Mama," but the idiosyncratic track listing is a little skewed, featuring three early gems by Leadbelly and two each by Big Joe Williams and Big Bill Broonzy instead of trying to provide a more balanced overview of the label's offerings.
