(3 Customer Reviews)
Japanese version features the bonus track "Tokyo Street" (feat Taro Hakase).
Mike Sanchez and Eric Mouquet of Deep Forest have always been musical anthropologists, sampling the sounds of other cultures (Pygmy tribes of Cameroon, Gypsies of Eastern Europe, Cuban street musicians, to name just a few) and swirling them into their own ambient dance pop. On this 2002 release the French duo revisits some old samples and also brings in Turkish chant, Japanese pop, and Indian vocals. They introduce startling new elements as well: heavy electric guitars, many lyrics written in English, and a live drummer replacing the programmed rhythm tracks of their previous recordings.
Many of the lyrics here concern environmental issues and warn of the impending dangers of soullessness. Definitely not soulless are "Yuki Song," an old-fashioned love song with stirring vocals by Beverly Jo Scott, and the heart-rending "Will You Be Ready" featuring Japanese pop singer Chitose Hajime and the plaintive strains of shakuhachi flute. While not a typical Deep Forest album, MUSIC DETECTED is a weighty, personal work that reveals more and more on each listen.
Japanese edition of the French dance act's long-anticipated fourth album with 2 bonus tracks 'Endangered Species' (Galleon Remix Radio Edit) & 'Tokyo Street' (feat. Taro Hakase) (Japan only). 2002.
Deep Forest: Michel Sanchez (accordion, piano, keyboards); Eric Mouquet (keyboards, vocoder, zendrum).
Additional personnel: Beverly Jo Scott (vocals, vocoder); Stefka Iordanova (vocals); Philippe Paradis (guitar); Dave Fall (drums); Kifu Mitsuhashi (shakuhachi).

| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
Music Detected
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to be aesthetically opposed, they're both producer-driven music constructed layer by layer from rhythm to the vocal, where the overall sound matters more than what's being sung. Which isn't to say that Lewis doesn't sing the hell out of the songs on Echo: she ...

| | Aretha Franklin 30 Greatest Hits CDs (1985)
Music Detected
$11.15 The title may not be 100-percent accurate, since the songs here are culled from Franklin's soul years, roughly between 1967 and 1974, and she's had lots more hits since then. That nit picked, however, this is a genuine embarrassment of riches, with Aretha's soaring voice and under-appreciated piano decorating one wonderful genre-defining song ("Respect," "Chain of Fools," "Natural Woman," "Since You've Been Gone") after another. The most revelatory cut is probably "I Say a Little Prayer," in which Franklin imbues the song with a spine-tingling gospel flavor without ever losing the pop delicacy of the original Dionne Warwick version. But just about everything else here is essential listening.
This compilation spans the late-'60s to the mid-'70s. ...
| | Radian Chimeric CD (2009)
Music Detected
$12.78 Austrian synth-bass-drums trio Radian has been making austere, arty post-rock (remember when that was a thing?) music since the late '90s. But unlike Tortoise or other, related acts, Radian has never seemed particularly interested in human concepts of beauty. In a way, their stark instrumental tracks recall Autechre more ...
