The Welsh also like to sing together, forming choruses of every description, such as the ten thousand voice World Choir, and they particularly like singing contests so that they can sing together and find more singers to celebrate. Charlotte Church started winning contests at the age of eight and came to national attention by appearing on a television talent show. After making the talk show rounds she was brought to the attention of Sony and this CD, recorded when she was twelve, followed. Her voice has some womanly qualities, but this is still very much a child's voice without the manner of a trained singer. Her natural approach brings a different dimension to much of this material and is heard to best advantage in a selection of harp-accompanied Welsh traditional songs. Cole's chops are established from the start, with an energetic live version of "Mr. Melody" that finds her soaring through her stratospheric range. Life and Works of Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky album for sale Vassar Clements has always been one of the most recognizable fiddlers in bluegrass. When he steps to the mic to take a solo, the most foursquare traditional breakdown or reel takes on a jazzy, swinging flavor -- one that generally disappears as soon as his solo ends. On this album, he moves well away from the whole bluegrass genre, opting instead for the accompaniment of a jazz band and a program of undiluted swing, jazz, and R&B. Opening with a burning rendition of Jelly Roll Morton's "King Porter Stomp," Clements delivers one original (the thoroughly charming "Hillbilly Jazz"), several standards ("That Old Black Magic," "String of Pearls"), and a handful of numbers by his pianist, Fred Bogert. Bogert's "If That's Love" sounds like it came straight out of Muscle Shoals, with Clements' slinky fiddle weaving in, out, and around the sturdy drumming and funky bass. "Ezra's Holler" is a sort of modified bossa nova on which Clements plays the head in unison with sax player Paul Martin Zonn, to very fine effect. Just about everything on this album is both musically interesting and lots of fun. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson In 1998 Vassar Clements, the phenominal fiddler and father of "Hillbilly Jazz", and his adored wife Milly, came to see independent Nashville producer Fred Bogert with the idea of doing a project that would reflect Vassar's passion for big band jazz. Fred's work with Jazz composer/wind man Paul Zonn and their band, "The Acme Jazz Movers", fit nicely with Vassar's taste for funky, bluesy jazz, and so the Little Big Band was born. Vassar and the Little Big Band recorded "Back Porch Swing" during 1998 and 1999 in the famous RCA Studio B in Nashville. They then played road dates around the country to share their music with Vassar fans and more in places like the Fillmore West and Grateful Dead- friendly venues up and down the US west coast and in the Norteast. During this time Vassar lost Milly to cancer, and Paul Zonn fell ill and passed away in 2000. Paul's part in the band was picked up by eclectic wind man Bob Bowers, and the band continued to perform infrequently until Vassar's health declined in 2004. This collection is a definitive statement of Vassar's jazz genious, loved by critics and fans alike. It stands as part of this gifted, loving man's musical legacy.
