Music is integral to this seminal Jamaican film, as it follows the exploits of drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, who plays himself, and featuring a myriad of other denizens of the music industry in lead roles and bit parts. The movie itself was awash in music, which pours out of clubs, studios, record shops, and radios. The soundtrack features only some of the songs included in the film, but what a collection of cuts it is. Bunny Wailer's anthemic title track, Inner Circle's infectious "We a Rockers," Jacob Miller's masterpiece "Tenement Yard," Peter Tosh's threatening "Stepping Razor," Junior Byles' equally forceful "Fade Away" -- classic songs one and all. Gorgeous harmonies are delivered up by the Maytones, Justin Hines & the Dominoes, and the Heptones on some of their greatest songs. Jamaica's smoothest singer, Gregory Isaacs, performs a sublime "Slavemaster," Junior Murvin's sweet tones simmer across "Police and Thieves," and Kiddus I delivers up an extraordinary cultural toast. One of the most arresting scenes in the film belonged to Burning Spear's Winston Rodney, performing a powerful a cappella "Jah No Dead." It is just as potent on record, and segues exquisitely into Third World's loving cover of "Satta Amasagana." From rockers to grounations, Rockers had it all, and the soundtrack remains one of the most diverse yet coherent albums of the roots age. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

| | Big Bad Love CD (2002) Soundtrack
Rockers Soundtrack album
$16.15 The film BIG BAD LOVE takes place in the North Hill Country of Mississippi, where vestiges of the old America still remain intact. One very vital manifestation of those vestiges is the presence of a number of soulful, gritty bluesmen including R.L. Burnside, Asie Payton, and T Model Ford. Nobody's fool, writer/director/star Arliss Howard helped compile a soundtrack for the film that relies heavily on the earthy, penetrating contributions of the aforementioned artists. More than local color, Burnside and company provide something of a sonic heartbeat for the film (in fact, R.L. appears onscreen). The BIG BAD LOVE soundtrack isn't limited to blues, though. Arliss's taste apparently walks hand in hand with his powers of persuasion, as he managed to entice Tom Waits to compose and perform two ...
| | Junior Murvin Police & Thieves CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Rockers Soundtrack CD music
$9.49 Junior Murvin, along with co-writer/producer Lee Perry, created a certifiable reggae classic in "Police and Thieves." Covered by The Clash and symbolic of its time (the mid-1970s) musically and politically, the song is the centerpiece of an album considered by reggae fans to be one of the greatest albums of the genre.
Murvin sings powerful, intense lyrics with a sweet-sounding falsetto voice (recalling Smokey Robinson), while Lee Perry frames the songs with dark, almost haunted tempos, sharp guitar work and seemingly bottomless reverb. Murvin mixes British/Jamaican angst and fury with gospel fervor, and the tunes stick with you long after the CD stops.
This is one of those albums that winds up on just about every list of essential reggae recordings, and with good reason. Like Max Romeo's War Ina Babylon (which is equally essential, and can be considered a companion to this one), it was recorded under ...
| | Forbidden Broadway, Vol. 3 CD (1994) Original Soundtrack
Rockers Soundtrack music CDs
$9.55 Though the second volume of Forbidden Broadway was recorded and released in 1991, writer/director Gerard Alessandrini apparently hadn't quite had his say on the Broadway shows of the late 1980s, since he mixes into the third volume his parodies of Grand Hotel ("Grim Hotel") and a production of The Merchant of Venice starring Dustin Hoffman as Shylock, both of which date from 1989. And of course, as usual, he harks back to even earlier periods of Broadway history, rewriting "Ya Got Trouble" from The Music Man to comment on the current state of the theater and taking off on Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand, Ethel Merman, and Mary Martin. Carol Channing, meanwhile, good naturedly plays herself, tossing in her own ...
