Maleventum album
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer)--working primarily within their technical thrash comfort zone (think PEACE SELLS through RUST IN PEACE), with only a few latter-day elements ...

Maleventum album
$6.49 Prior to Lovedrive's recording, the Scorpions' lineup had a major change when their lead guitarist, Uli Jon Roth, quit the group (not to mention, the rock genre was rapidly changing). With this in mind, the band not only highlighted the album with the licks and riffs of three guitarists (Rudolf Schenker, Michael ...
| | Thousand Foot Krutch Welcome To The Masquerade CD (2009)
Maleventum CD music
$12.09 On 2009's WELCOME TO THE MASQUERADE, the trio that put the "rawk" in rawkfest gives no hint of the rap element that once defined their sound, fueling the evidence that the guys from Toronto have fully morphed into one of the decade's powerhouse modern rock outfits. No longer living in a world dominated by rapcore and nu metal groups that once drew their comparisons (Limp Bizkit, Korn), Thousand Foot Krutch have moved on, climbing new heights of pure rock which, it would seem, the band was always destined to reach. Indeed, the band's full-scale audio assault makes it difficult to imagine that they could ever top the crystal-clear production and deliberate crunch of MASQUERADE. Each track is propelled by muscular riffs, fighting their way into permanent memory alongside the greatest mainstream rock bands of the decade. The fist-pumping anthem "Fire It Up" was already featured in video games and movie trailers by the time the album dropped. Other pure doses of adrenaline like "E for Extinction" and ...

| | Holly Arntzen It's A Matter Of Heart CD (2008)
Maleventum CD music
$21.55 Produced between 1994 and 1996, this release features Holly with David Sinclair on guitar, and other well known Vancouver musicians including guitarist Stephen Nikleva, bassist Tom Christiansen and harmonica player Keith Bennett. The title track was composed by Stan Rogers. The album addresses the issues of environment and social justice. It was produced by Tom Newman, the co-producer of \"Tubular Bells I & II\" (Mike Oldfield), and Bill Buckingham (Skywalk).Canadian musician and songwriter, Holly Arntzen, discovered at an early age a passion for music and performing. After studying classical French horn in Czechoslovakia she turned her attention to using her incredible vocal talents in the service of raising public awareness about the environment and the need for all of us to protect it. At about age seven, Holly experienced her first trauma with wildlife when a hapless black bear was shot behind the family homestead in North Vancouver. A sad day it was. There have been many sad days since. So many species are now endangered. Since that day she has been passionate about saving our environment and, in particular, endangered species. Holly comes from pioneering stock and a sea-faring family, always ready to tackle issues that seem insurmountable to others. Surviving as an environmental singer for over 25 years has given Holly an appreciation of these earlier life-styles. Fortunately she developed an approach to issues that is non-confrontational, focusing on education, rather than attacking the status-quo in offensive ways. Holly might be thought of as a modern day explorer. Working in collaboration, for many years with her late husband and producer Stephen Foster, and today with a group of talented musicians, she creates songs of innocence that carry a much deeper relevance. She is always ready to 'tilt at a windmill' if it will lead to deeper understanding of the important environmental issues that confront us in our daily lives. Holly has shared the stage with Stan Rogers, Herbie Hancock, Dan Hill, Paul Horn, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah McLachlan, Paul Hyde, Doug Bennett, David Sinclair, Fred Penner, The Arrogant Worms, Raffi and many others. Since the 1980's Holly has performed at major folk and children's festivals across Canada, done concert tours in most provinces, and taken part in many radio and television productions. In 1995 she was the only Canadian artist in Japan to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where she ended up singing for the Japanese Royal Family. More recently she has collaborated, through the Artist Response Team (ART), in developing in-school programs throughout Canada, working with thousands of children ...

| | Felix You Are The One I Pick CD (2009)
Maleventum CD music
$11.69 Starting an album with a soft, reverb-heavy piano and vocal piece called "Death to Everyone But Us" might not seem completely congruous, but Felix obviously know their twisted adult pop as well as their drone contemplations -- and given how the non-pigeonholed lineage of performers ranging from Laura Nyro and Scott Walker to Tori Amos and Nellie McKay now fills its own niche in musical history, why not this particular twist on it? Thus Felix's debut album, with singer/pianist/cellist Lucinda Chua and guitarist/percussionist Chris Summerlin creating music that might be one of the most atypical things released on the Kranky label without actually going against its now long-running aesthetic of moody, enveloping sounds. Chua's singing and playing occupy a space somewhere between direct forthrightness and dreamy wooziness, her vocals sometimes completely swirled into the ether, at other times her piano suddenly bursting forth to drive a song ...
