Based on William Somerset Maugham's novel, THE RAZOR'S EDGE follows a young man's search for identity. After experiencing WWI, veteran Larry Darrell (Bill Murray) seeks spiritual peace and recovery. After leaving his fiancee (Catherine Hicks), he travels to war-torn Europe and finally to the mystic Himalayas, and eventually finds what he's looking for in manual labor and the wisdom of an Indian guru. However, Larry realizes that he can no longer resume the life he left behind, and that he must end his relationship with his fiancee if he is to reach his goal. But he finds love with another woman (Theresa Russell), an she causes new trouble for Larry. A labor of love for Murray, he wrote the script with director John Byrum and demonstrates previously unseen dramatic strength.

Maugham's novel was written in 1944, and the first film version was made in 1946. Darryl F. Zanuck produced the '46 film, and Edmund Goulding directed it. Lamar Trotti wrote the screenplay. Throne Power starred in the role of Larry Darrell (played here by Bell Murray), and his co-stars were Gene Tierney, john Payne, Anne Baxter, Clifton Webb, Herbert Marshall, Lucile Watson and Elsa Lanchester.

Christopher Guest follows up his hilarious mockumentary BEST IN SHOW with this parody of the folk music industry. Three well-known folk groups come together for a reunion concert in New York City, singing brilliantly funny songs and producing uniquely bizarre laughs along the way. The Folksmen are an all-male trio consisting of an upright bass, a banjo, a guitar, and a whole lot of melody. Hilarious scenes of the group rehearsing casually in the kitchen, while reflecting on bygone days, are some of the most candidly funny moments in the film. Fake archival photos of the band, combined with the names of their hit songs--"Hitchin'", Singin'", "Ramblin'", "Wishin'", and "Pickin'"--generate wonderfully dry jokes. When not peering in on the Folksmen, the film spends time getting to know Mitch and Mickey, a popular duo and a great folk love story. Mitch and Mickey talk openly about the emotional torment of their breakup, though it is clearly difficult for them.
