While the pop/rock industrial genre seemed virtually dead from a mainstream perspective, many artists continued to hone their metallic/dance craft well into the 21st century. Led by musician Alex Moklebust, Europe's Zeromancer found enough success on their home continent to convince American goth/industrial indie Cleopatra to release Eurotrash in 2002. Few industrial artists have managed achieve the level of pop and power that Moklebust creates on this impressive disc since Trent Reznor first brought nihilistic dance music to a rock audience. There are a few plodding moments, but for the most part Zeromancer maintains a high songwriting and production standard throughout this 12-track collection. Highlights include "Need You Like a Drug," "Wannabe," and the cover of Real Life's '80s hit "Send Me an Angel." With a surprising number of downright catchy tunes, Eurotrash is one of the more notable industrial accomplishments of 2002. ~ Vincent Jeffries

Eurotrash
$9.65 A forgotten man in the rise of West Coast rap, Tone-Loc was effectively cut off from his hometown scene in Los Angeles by his unexpected pop success. Paced by the singles "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" -- both co-written by a pre-fame Young MC, and some of the earliest productions by the legendary Dust Brothers -- Loc's debut album, Loc-ed After Dark, became the second rap album to top the pop charts, following the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill. Loc's distinctively rough, raspy voice and easygoing delivery made him an appealing storyteller, but he was aiming for the streets more than the pop charts. So there's the occasional ...
| | Zeromancer Clone Your Lover CD (2000)
Eurotrash
$13.69 Although Clone Your Lover is the second Zeromancer CD made available in the U.S., it seems to have actually been the band's first full-length album, originally released in 2000. It finds the group working in a style that will be instantly recognizable to fans of Orgy and, to some extent, Prodigy: the band's sound consists of equal parts rock, pop, industrial, and goth, and while purist devotees of any of those genres will probably object to its mongrel nature, the combination is really not bad. At its best, Zeromancer does a ...
| | Dope Group Therapy CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Eurotrash
$10.59 Dope's third full-length appears through Recon, an N.Y.C. upstart affiliated with frontman Edsel Dope through management ties. In addition to producing Group Therapy, the dreadlocked kingpin directed and/or conceived of videos for each of the album's 13 songs, including them here as DVD add-ons. The bulk of additional content is a nice touch, and should be appreciated by the group's core fan base. And Group Therapy is much stronger than 2001's flawed Life. Pounding, hard-charging percussion and rumbling, near atonal guitars are garnished with the occasional electronic flourish to form a base for Edsel's guttural yawp and rudimentary singing. He utilizes both on the obstinate "I Am," which crosses emotive Linkin Park-style verses with the double-time chorus shout of "F*ck it, I am what I am." This dirty-mouthed mulishness is typical of Edsel's lyrical muse, which leans heavily on both the F-word and themes common to the genre. Remember "Die MF Die" from Life? That song's rallying cry here as been recast ...
| | Zeromancer Zzyzx CD (2004)
Eurotrash
$12.49 If you were to place Zeromancer in a niche, you might envision a harder, more aggressive Savage Garden or Joy of Electric. Lead singer Alex Moklebust takes songs such as "Teenage Recoil" to radio-friendly, studio-polished heights thanks to the harder guitar hook and breezy singalong chorus. The synthesized touches à la Depeche Mode also give the song some depth during the bridge portion. The intensity and quality rises during the crunchy and infectious "Hollywood," with its soaring vocals and lovely Brit-like delivery. A softer melody brings U2 or the Calling to mind on the alluring and engaging "Famous Last Words," despite the orchestral touches that seep in. One definite positive for Zeromancer ...

| | Donna Lewis Now In A Minute CD (1996)
Eurotrash
$7.59 Donna Lewis is a vocalist/keyboardist/composer who combines electronics and modern production techniques with a '60s Goffin/King compositional sensibility. Her musical vision arrives fully-realized on her debut album, on which she uses soft, textural layers of keyboards to clothe her direct, unpretentious lyrics. Most of Lewis' songs focus on that perennial pop subject, love and the lack thereof. They are delivered in a small, fragile voice that simultaneously recalls the self-possessed eccentricity of Tori Amos and the wispy waifishness of Jewel. While Lewis composes much more straightforward pop confections than either Amos or Jewel, she is capable of creating an airy, atmospheric landscape with synthesizers and drum machines, and it provides a perfect foil for her old-style songwriting. NOW IN A MINUTE maintains this approach throughout; Lewis is a musician who knows exactly what she wants to do and has the ability to traverse an album's worth of tunes without once breaking stride.
Classically trained, ex-music teacher Donna Lewis made a major impact in the pop world with her 1996 hit "I Love You Always Forever." The track, from the Welsh singer's debut release Now in a Minute, was inspired by an H.E. Bates novel and spent over two months at number two on the American charts. There's nothing else nearly as compelling on the album, although there is a handful of other solid tracks like the ...

Eurotrash
$16.45 The album features 14 songs, covering a wide range of musical styles that incorporates country, bluegrass, jazz, blues, gospel, folk, Steely Dan, Little Feat and Frank Zappa influences. The diversity of styles isn't very common on record albums today, but is of course familiar to anyone who enjoys listening to various artist compilation albums. Perhaps this album resembles what would be my favourite radio music show.Three songs were recorded at home with me playing all the instruments, six were recorded at home with lots of help from some of my favourite musicians (including Erik Rutjes, Frido ter Beek, Peter Kalisvaart, Chris Barchet, Harriet Middelhoek, Arjen van El and Xandra Zijlstra) and five were recorded live in a recording studio in Amsterdam with a motley collection of musicians (including Dicky Greenwood, Mr. Boogie Woogie, Steve Grams, Danny Krieger, Wouter Kiers, Peter van den Bos, and Inigo Grimbergen) who recorded this batch in a single afternoon session without any rehearsal. The result is an album that isn't intended to be a showcase of technical perfection, but rather a document of musicians having a good time in their living room.Who am I? Well, I'm a Dutch singer/songwriter, bass player, pedal steel guitarist, and music teacher. I spent my childhood in many different countries including Syria, India, Algeria, Zambia, and the USA. My early influences were the albums in my parents' collection: Chopin, Schubert, Nina Simone, Gerry Mulligan, Nat King Cole, Bob Dylan, The Beatles - a small but eclectic collection. Started playing the guitar at age 6. When living in Brookings, South Dakota, I was encouraged to play acoustic bass in the string orchestra and electric bass with the jazz band and the high school chorus, and thus discovered my first love: the BASS. I joined various bands, and started writing my first original songs. After obtaining my diploma at the Conservatory of Hilversum in 1989, I joined, on bass, Jaap Dekker's Jazz & Boogie Set (from 1989 ...
