An American Quilt: 1967-1974 album for sale Product Description
An American Quilt: 1967-1974 album for sale by Bobbie Gentry was released Aug 13, 2002 on the Raven label. Released two years after EMI/Zonophone's The Capitol Years: Ode to Bobbie Gentry, Raven's 26-track, single-disc collection An American Quilt: 1967-1974, intentionally or not, serves as a counterpoint to that pop-oriented compilation. An American Quilt: 1967-1974 songs Where that collection left off many charting hits, it did have an MOR, mainstream pop bent, particularly through its inclusion of many covers. This contains the missing hits -- "Okolona River Bottom Band," "Louisiana Man," "Mornin' Glory," although "He Made a Woman Out of Me" and the Glen Campbell duets "Let It Be Me" and "All I Have to Do Is Dream" are missing -- along with the hits and usual suspects from The Capitol Years ("Ode to Billie Joe," "Mississippi Delta," "Touch 'Em With Love," "Fancy," "Apartment 21"). An American Quilt: 1967-1974 CD music contains a single disc with 26 songs. ...See Full Description

| Good Attempt...Could Have Been Better I have been a die-hard Bobbie Gentry fan since the first time I heard "Ode to Billie Joe". That raspy voice reached out and grabbed me; never mind trying to figure out what the mystery was behind the song. By butch2ee (Boston, MA) |

Mike Bloomfield / Bloomfield-Kooper-Stills / Al Kooper / Stephen Stills Super Session CD (1968) Top Seller
An American Quilt: 1967-1974 buy CD music A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...Johnny was signed to Columbia after this gig!). Newly remastered & now with 4 bonus tracks, 'Albert's Shuffle' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Season of the Witch.' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Blues For Nothing' (Studio Outtake) & 'Fat Grey Cloud' Previously Unreleased Live Track). Features 12-page booklet with unpublished photos from the recording session, new liner notes by Al Kooper & the Rolling Stone Hall Of Fame review by David Fricke. 60 scintillating minutes! 13 tracks. Colunbia/Legacy. 2003.

An American Quilt: 1967-1974 album for sale Collectables' The Golden Classics of Bobbie Gentry is an expanded edition of her debut album Ode to Billie Joe, featuring all the songs from the original album plus eight bonus tracks, all of which were hits: "Louisiana Man," "Okolona River Bottom Band," "He Made a Woman Out of Me," "Fancy," "Apartment," plus the Glen Campbell duets "All I Have to Do is Dream," "Let It Be Me" and "Mornin' Glory." Delta Sweete/Local Gentry CD (2006)
An American Quilt: 1967-1974 CD music The Mississippi-born singer works her Delta-tinged country magic on a variety of covers and self-penned compositions on this vintage 1960s twofer, including a variety of Lennon-McCartney compositions, John D. Loudermilk's "Tobacco Road," and her own "Reunion" and "Okolona River Bottom Band."
Combined for the first time on one CD, Raven presents two unique albums by the legendary Grammy-Award winning singer/songwriter Bobbie Gentry. While best remembered for her first and biggest hit, the bittersweet Ode to Billie Joe, Gentry continued to prove herself a performer and writer of rare talent, issuing a string of high quality albums until her retirement in the early 1970s. Both released in 1968, The Delta Sweete and Local Gentry are superb examples of Gentry's artistry at work. The first features the bold and brassy Okolona River Bottom Band, the melodious Mornin' Glory and outstanding covers of Louisiana Man, Tobacco Road and Parchman Farm Blues. The follow-up includes three Lennon/McCartney songs while also focusing on Gentry's own enticing blend of country-meets-soul-meets-pop with exquisite songs like Sweete Peony, Casket Vignette and Recollection. Capitol Years: Ode To Bobbie Gentry CD (2000)
An American Quilt: 1967-1974 buy CD music Among the most undefinable performers ever to be marketed as "country," Bobbie Gentry possessed extraordinary talents as a husky-voiced singer, pioneering female producer, and songwriter that landed her at the top of the pop charts in 1967 with "Ode to Billie Joe." While she achieved lasting fame due to that fictional incident on the Tallahatchie Bridge, Gentry's string of albums for Capitol in the late '60s and early '70s reveal a deeper, more album-oriented artist. THE CAPITOL YEARS-ODE TO BOBBIE culls hits and highlights from these albums and represents some of the best of her enigmatic fusion of Southern soul, classic American pop, and countrypolitan. "Mississippi Delta," the gritty lead-off track, mines the same Southern Gothic territory as "Ode to Billie Joe," while the minor chart hit "Fancy" reveals a flair for contemporary '70s pop. More stunning still are the two tracks from her highly underrated arty roots-psych opus THE DELTA SWEETE, "Big Boss Man" and "Reunion." While Gentry's first two albums remain essential listening for fans looking for more, THE CAPITOL YEARS-ODE TO BOBBIE is a fantastic collection for neophytes or enthusiasts wanting all the best in one place.
She busted onto the pop music scene in 1968 with her mammoth chart topping hit "Ode To Billie Joe", prompting millions of discussions of just what was that song about! But there was much more to the recording career of this very alluring singer. This anthology presents 21 great tracks she recorded for the Capitol Records label with both originals and covers that she applied her unique stamp of interpretation.
CAPITOL YEARS: ODE TO BOBBIE GENTRY features 21 favorites from charismatic pop singer Bobbie Gentry.
