Think of Angie Martinez as the hip-hop Laura Cantrell, an influential DJ so deeply entrenched in her chosen scene that she decided to jump to the other side of the fence, becoming a highly regarded recording artist. When the host of New York's Hot 97 debuted in 2001 with UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, it was plain that she had something of her own to offer to the hip-hop world. Like its predecessor, ANIMAL HOUSE features a bevy of Martinez's famous friends, but her own voice and style are front and center throughout. Martinez's no-nonsense rhyming is ably supported by constantly surprising and inventive production, as on the emphasis track "If I Could Go," which mixes a Latin-inflected guitar line with synths that resemble nothing so much as the Microsoft e-mail alert tones. Fat Joe, Kelis, and others add their personal touches to the album, but it's Martinez who shines the brightest here.

tight work in a world where such wack "emcees" such as big tymers and ja rule can go platinum, it nice to hear a whole cd where you dont have only 1 good song and a bunch of crap. angie aint the best lyricist, but her flows are aight and she puts more effort into her songs than most rappers out there...girl, keep doing your thang Submitted by a reviewer (tampa, fl) Was This Review Helpful? It sucks You know hip-hop is at it's downfall when a wack lyic spittin' DJ comes out with an album. Where is the true emcees at. Beats aint the only thing that makes albums. It's bad enough that JaRule changed his style and Puffy's selling platnium records. Where tha skillz at!!!! Submitted by a reviewer (New York City) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

It doesn't hurt to have friends like Wyclef Jean, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige. But Angie Martinez stands her ground when rapping alongside mega-rap stars like these on her debut album, Up Close and Personal (Elektra Records). ...

| | Totally Unrestricted: The Millie Jackson Anthology CDs (1997)
Animal House songs
$15.65 Recorded between 1972 and 1983. Includes liner notes by Randall Grass.
It would seem that a double-disc Millie Jackson anthology would be definitive, all that anyone would need from the notoriously raunchy soul singer. That's not necessarily the case with Totally Unrestricted: The Millie Jackson Anthology. Over the course of two discs, Totally Unrestricted compiles highlights from her recordings for Spring Records. Jackson was with the label from 1971 to 1983. During those years she had a number of Top 40 R&B hits -- including the Top Ten singles "Ask Me What You Want," "My Man a Sweet Man," "Hurts So Good" and "If You're Not Back in Love by Monday" -- and the majority of those tracks are featured on this extensive retrospective. By featuring the cream of her '70s and early-'80s recordings, Totally Unrestricted certainly offers a good portrait of the peak of her career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
