In 2002, Euphoria released Simplicity/A Sign of the Times, which contained two albums -- Simplicity (1967, originally released on Pacific Jazz) and A Sign of the Times (1965, originally on World Pacific) -- by Joe Pass on one compact disc. ~ Tim Sendra
This disc pairs two of Pass' World Pacific albums, Simplicity, from 1967, which gives us the post-bebop Joe swinging elegantly and improvising eloquently with a small group of first-rate sidemen and an urbane and sophisticated feel, and 66's A Sign of the Times, on which Joe, accompanied by Chet Baker, graces the hit tunes of the 60's with his jazz chops. Sundazed 2002 release.
2 LP's on 1 CD: SIMPLICITY (1967)/A SIGN OF THE TIMES (1966).

| Simplicity/A Sign Of The Times Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Dissappointing This is not Joe Pass jazz. I don't know how they talked him into doing this CD. He must have needed the money. While listening I kept feeling words like groovy, cool man, and seeing girls with big hair after using a whole can of hair spray. But, Joe's playing so it's worth being in my library. Submitted by dcramer (Marysville, OH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
Unexpectedly good I bought this CD knowing nothing about it. Clearly an attempt to commercialize Mr. Pass' great talent, this compilation is nonetheless a classy offering ,and the second album with Chet Baker is a gem, full of lovely sweet tunes and very tasteful playing by both men. A welcome re-release,with Joe swinging lyrically, and soulfully throughout. Excellent value, and well worth having. Submitted by Pete (Okayama, Japan.) Was This Review Helpful? It's Cocktail Jazz Beginning in 1970, Joe Pass began playing the highly idiosyncratic music we remember him for: sophisticated improvisations, frequently in a solo setting or accompanied by some of the best musicians in the world. This music was recorded before that, and it sounds about like all the other nondescript jazz you heard in bars throughout North America in the 1970s. The solos are nice, but they're nothing to write home about.. Submitted by Jim (Calhoun, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Simplicity/A Sign Of The Times
$12.35 The inventor of the seven-string guitar (which he called a "lap piano"), George Van Eps always kept the melody in mind and was able to play a theme, its harmonies, and a bassline simultaneously in an unhurried and relaxed style while creating the most beautiful chords in the world. The son of the pioneering banjoist Fred Van Eps, he was a significant musician starting in the early '30s and spent much of his life playing in the studios. The guitarist appeared on many jazz recordings along the way, but other than four titles in 1949, his recorded debut as a leader did not take place until he headed an album for Columbia in 1956. Late in life Van Eps made three sets for Concord that he ...

Simplicity/A Sign Of The Times
$9.65 The saying that "life begins at 40" is certainly open to debate -- especially if you live in a youth-obsessed culture like the United States. But for jazz artists, there can be some truth in that saying; the history of jazz is full of artists who did some of their best work after 40. Joe Pass is a perfect example; Pass turned 40 in 1969, and the '70s were an ...

Simplicity/A Sign Of The Times
$8.39 Rick Braun continues to satisfy his global audience with Kisses in the Rain, his first solo CD since the 1998 chart-topper Full Stride. Braun penned his own musical tastes on seven songs, and also covers Bill Withers' "Use Me," Leon Russell's "Song for You," and Johnny Britt's original "Grover's Groove." Braun get high marks for his excellent collaborations with smooth jazz guitarists Norman Brown, Peter White, and Tony Maiden on "Car Wash," "Kisses in the Rain," and "Grover's Groove," while arrangements that feature Harvey Mason, Luis Conte, Li'l John Roberts, and Paulinho da Costa on drums and percussion keep the funk and groove masters at a solid pace on the beautiful ballad "Emma's Song," "Simplicity," and ...
