| | Blackalicious Blazing Arrow CD Blackalicious Discography of CDs
For progressive hip-hop acts, aesthetic and commercial success seem to rarely walk hand in hand. Blackalicious proves to be an exception to that rule with BLAZING ARROW. Pessimists might suggest that the album's chart placing is due to the impressive array of guest stars, from old-school rap poet Gil Scott-Heron to R&B siren Jaguar Wright and rock-pop fave Ben Harper. While these guests do give an indication of the breadth of influences and styles present here, they are only the tip of the iceberg.
"I'll build my heaven on what is here" Blackalicious offers on "Nowhere Fast," giving both an example of their positive lyrical outlook and indication of the sonic riches so abundant on BLAZING ARROW. An impressive array of sophisticated sonic collage elements, hard-grooving funk rhythms, strings, and free-flowing, intelligent raps are at the heart of this complex-yet-organic recording. You'll hear none of the soundalike synth riffs and jeep beats that plague so much cookie-cutter hip-hop. These guys are blazing a new path.

| | R Kelly Untitled CD (2009)
Blazing Arrow CD music
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely up-tempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One").

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Blazing Arrow music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that ...

| | Scarface Diary CD (1994)
Blazing Arrow CD music
$14.29 On THE DIARY, rapper Scarface creates a powerful, almost operatic progression of characters, portraying the different roles as they derive from the rapper's own persona. So he speaks either as Scarface or as Brad Jordan (his real name), as the cold-blooded gangsta or as a shrewd, compassionate observer of the mean streets of warring colors, doomed youth and innocents caught in the crossfire.
THE DIARY is a graphic, powerful, unwavering look at the day to day violence that has become brutally commonplace for far too many ...
| | 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Grace Jones CD (2003)
Blazing Arrow music CDs
$8.09 Recorded between 1977 & 1982. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin.
Basically, this Grace Jones entry in the Millennium Collection series is a one-disc version of Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions with "La Vie en Rose" added as representation of her early disco years. The Compass Point years were great, with Sly & Robbie providing the groovy reggae backbeat and Jones supplying the European iciness. The cosmopolitan and paranoid versions of Roxy Music's "Love Is the Drug," the Normal's "Warm Leatherette," and the Pretenders' "Private Life" are all excellent. Although the collection somehow leaves off her signature tune, "Slave to the Rhythm," the tunes written by Grace and friends are just as good, especially the widely sampled "My Jamaican Guy." If the compilers had included the few good singles from Jones' post-Island period it would have made the collection all the more valuable, but there's still a lot of great music here. ~ David Jeffries
