With his sophomore release, Vieux Farka Touré steps out of the shadow of his late, illustrious father. He's not only developed into a convincing songwriter and singer (but one who happily concedes the microphone to other talents, like Afel Bocoum, who sings on three tracks here), but a stunning guitarist, as well. You can hear traces of his father in his work, but the style is very much his own, flowing and free, rippling almost like a kora, but also throwing in lovely, darting runs, as on "Aï Haïra," where the fills -- not to mention the solo -- are delicious, powered along by talking drum. It's all ineffably West African, and he's not afraid to play, as most of the tracks top the four-minute mark, leaving lots of room for him to display his fretboard talent. Of course, there are a number of bluesy touches, notably "Souba Souba," which simmers as guitar and ngoni work together. "Slow Jam" lives up to its name perfectly, while the closing reprise of "Fafa" gives a soft acoustic end to the electric opening cut. The use of a drum ...

This curious three-disc box set mixes in old blues 78s with latter rediscovery recordings to form a rather random, but pleasantly cohesive (if somewhat cursory) introduction to early blues. The wide variety of styles here is impressive, though, ranging from the guttural roars of Charley Patton and Son House, through the highly personalized blues pieces of Sleepy John Estes, the haunting tunings of Skip James, to the near-jazz urban piano blues pieces of Peetie Wheatstraw and Amos Milburn. It's not an exhaustive box set, certainly, but it would probably work fine for casual listeners looking for a representative sampling of early blues styles. ~ Steve Leggett

Cuba, Isla de la Musica is a beautiful compilation from Spain of moving, diverse tracks that crisscross genres and eras. These 12 tracks come from both well-known and only-for-the-connoisseur talent, but it doesn't change the fact that what is here is deeply moving, sublime music. Grupo Sierra Maestra and Trio Matamoros are here as are Beny Moré and Maria Teresa with Lorenzo Hierrezuelo and Abelardo Beloso. But there are more obscure (to these gringo ears) artists as well, who nonetheless offer the entire range of son, meringue, early salsa, cha cha music, and more. This is a 1953 reissue CD that looks like vinyl. The first of the famous Buck Clayton jam sessions. Two songs ('Sentimental Journey' and 'Moten Swing') are from a December 1953 session in which the trumpeter/leader is teamed with trumpeter Joe Newman, trombonists Urbie Green and Benny Powell, altoist Lem Davis, Julian Dash on tenor, baritonist Charlie Fowlkes, pianist Sir Charles Thompson, guitarist Freddie Green, bassist Walter Page and drummer Jo Jones. However it is 'How Hi the Fi' (cut along with 'Blue Moon' on March 31, 1954) that is most memorable.
