Barry Corbin, Cooper Huckabee, Debra Winger, John Travolta, Madolyn Smith Osborne, Scott Glenn - Director: James Bridges John Travolta and Debra Winger star in this cowboy version of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, in which all the action takes place at Gilley's country-western bar, a rough-and-tumble honky-tonk in the heart of Houston. Travolta plays Bud, a young country farmer who moves to the city to find work at an oil refinery and finds love with Sissy (Winger), a cowgirl of easy virtue and spirit. The two country-western singles fall in love on the dance floor of Gilley's and quickly marry only to discover that their workaday life is harder to cope with than they imagined, lightened only by hard-drinking weekends of glory at Gilley's, where they're both local heroes, line-dancin' and struttin' their stuff until dawn. In between crowd-pleasing rides on the club's mechanical bull, Bud and Sissy struggle to keep their new romance alive despite the competitive attentions of a new cowboy in town, a bull-riding ex-convict (Scott Glenn) who has his eye on Sissy. James Bridges's hard-driving drama glimmers with the intensity of the super saloon, capturing the wild and rough life of the modern cowboy. The soundtrack features musical performances from such greats as Bonnie Raitt, Mickey Gilley, Boz Scaggs, Kenny Rogers, and the Charlie Daniels Band. The film was based on the 1978 magazine article by Aaron Latham "The Ballad of the Urban Cowboy: America's Search for True Grit" for Esquire magazine.
URBAN COWBOY is being reset for the stage and a possible run on Broadway by original writer Aaron Latham and director Philip Osterman.
Country music star Bonnie Raitt appears onstage as part of a Gilley's bar band.
The scene in which Wes (Scott Glenn) swallows and chews up a worm while drinking a bottle of tequila wasn't a part of the original script. It was a joke shot for dailies.
Patrick Swayze's wife and mother (Lisa Niemi and Patsy Swayze) choreographed the dance numbers.
The film marked the feature-film debut of actress Madolyn Smith. Urban Cowboy Reviews: "...Winger is outstanding....[Travolta] has a strong screen magnetism..."
-- Har., Variety "...URBAN COWBOY is the most entertaining, most perceptive commercial American movie of the year....First-rate..."

Urban Cowboy film
$7.59 Replacing singer Dave Bickler with former Cobra vocalist Jimi Jamison paid off for Survivor, giving them three Top 20 singles from Jamison's debut on 1984's Vital Signs. His high harmonies, added to the group's well-maintained keyboard/guitar style, threw them into the ring with bands like Styx and Foreigner. Both "High on You" and "I Can't Hold Back" are built on congenial rock charm with an AOR dressiness, using the synthesizer to guide Jamison's energetic singing. Along the same lines as Journey's "Open Arms," the delicate but sternly sung ballad "The Search Is Over" gave them a number four single in May of 1985, bettered only by the number two placing of "Burning Heart" from the Rocky IV soundtrack a year later. Outside of the singles, the other songs on Vital Signs keep up with the band's effective formula, a much better effort than 1983's Caught in the Game, which lacked both enthusiasm and rock magnetism. Though a hits package from Survivor would cover most essentials, Vital Signs works best as the band's most spirited studio release. ~ Mike DeGagne
Survivor: Jimi Jamison (vocals); Frankie Sullivan (guitar, background vocals); Jim Peterik (keyboards, background vocals); Stephan Ellis (bass); Marc Droubay (drums).
| | Urban Cowboy CD (1980) Original Soundtrack
Urban Cowboy review
$6.09 It includes Joe Walsh, Bob Seger, Boz Scaggs, and Dan Fogelberg, so it's obviously not strictly a country album. But the soundtrack is important because it symbolizes the country trend that grew, then faded, in the early '80s (a case can be made that J.R. Ewing had a lot more influence on the fad than the film Urban Cowboy). Most of the country tracks here lean toward MOR. ~ Tom Roland
| | Dream Theater Images And Words CD (1992)
Urban Cowboy DVD
$11.15 While continuing to improve its musical chops and explore more progressive territory, Dream Theater reached its mainstream apex with 1992's IMAGES AND WORDS. Here the group capably combined prog-rock high-mindedness with metal crunch and commercial accessibility on the opening track "Pull Me Under," helping to snare an audience big enough to push this album past gold sales status.
What makes IMAGES AND WORDS stand out is the fluid marriage of shred tactics, soaring vocals, and catchy hooks, all wrapped up in a polished studio sound. Fans can argue whether this is the band's best, but there is no denying the power of epic, engaging songs like "Take the Time," "Under a Glass Moon," and "Metropolis - Part I," a track that foreshadowed the 1999 outing SCENES FROM A MEMORY. Following IMAGES AND WORDS, Dream Theater became increasingly complex in its approach, to varying degrees of success, but this album represents a time when the ensemble brought progressive metal to the masses with little compromise.

| | Night Ranger 7 Wishes CD (1985) (Import) England; Reissue; Remastered; United Kingdom
Urban Cowboy film
$17.15 After taking a break from the recording/touring grind to let their breakthrough commercial success sink in, Night Ranger issued their third album, SEVEN WISHES, in 1985. While it didn't contain a massive single comparable to "Sister Christian" (off their previous album, MIDNIGHT MADNESS), it kept Night Ranger's string of platinum albums intact.
The best-known tracks remain the melodic popster "Sentimental Street," the self-explanatory "The Boy Loves to Rock," and an album closer that lies somewhere in between the two aforementioned tracks--"Goodbye." Although Night Ranger appeared to be cruising with success, the band would abruptly break up after only one more release, 1988's BIG LIFE.
2008 digitally remastered reissue of this Top Ten album from the AOR rockers, originally released in 1988. 10 tracks including 'Sentimental Street', 'Four In The Morning', 'Goodbye' and 'The Boy Needs To Rock'. Standard jewel box within a slipcase featuring new liner notes. BGO.
Recorded at Image Recording, Hollywood, California and Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California.
