$8.65 Jean Martinon (1910-76) was not only a successful conductor but also an accomplished composer and his musical intuition and fine ear for detail is evident at every turn in these recordings. This release will achieve cult status, as did the original recordings, made in 1958 (Massenet, Meyerbeer) and 1959 (Dvorak). The French works were recorded by the legendary Decca producer John Culshaw, and for those not familiar with this music, it is scintillating, charming, tuneful, and, despite the age of the recordings, sonically thrilling. Likewise, Martinon and the LSO inject plenty of verve into the Slavonic Dances (originally recorded by Decca for RCA at a time when the two companies had a mutual arrangement).
| | Francesco Amos Youth Box CD (2008)
$16.45 Youth boxis a collection of guitar pieces composed and played in the early years of my youth. When a friend from Cadalo records heard some of these tracks, he asked me to publish them as 'vintage' recordings.By now, they are and they sound as old time home recordings, in some cases recorded live in a pub or in a small theatre. Nowadays, I look at these past brilliant hues as at the colours of a blooming sunrise, depicted with soft, indigo nuances, captured in space, lost in time, but not in my memory. Francesco AmosI Sotterranei (1977) is dedicated to Jack Kerouac and his book The Subterraneans. This is the early version of a more elaborated piece I still play nowadays. Welcome bye bye (1978) is inspired by Hugo Pratt, the creator of Corto Maltese. Hawk left wing (1975) is a tune by my friend guitarist Rene Brichta, for which I wrote the second guitar. We were used to play this piece together. Torna a settembre, 'come back in September', is what a producer told me in June 1981. I never went back, but in October I wrote this piece. Ebefrenia (1976), with its bottleneck-intro, is about 'adolescent schizophrenia'. Something of me (1984) is a sample of my way to play the electric guitar at that time. Occhi di Papiro (1983) is dedicated to the Finnish writer Mika Waltari, Ondate (1979) to the now disappeared poet and friend G. Ermete Porcheddu. Altre esche (1979), 'other baits': to the painter Iztok GorkiÄŤ, one of my best friends in my youth. Monks (1984) is inspired by an M.C. Escher's painting. Ombelico d'avorio was the soundtrack of some spots for the prevention of AIDS, awarded at 'Filmaker 1986' (Milano, Italy). Virgins and Pregnant virgins (1981) are inspired by the Arthur Rimbaud poem Un coeur sous une soutane. Nothing has been changed of the original recordings: enjoy it!
