Benny Carter Sax ala Carter! CD (1960)
Quintessence: New York (1936-1948) buy CD music Sax ala Carter! was originally released in 1960, and as the liner notes point out, was meant for a general audience. That means that the songs are popular standards and the renditions offered here are fairly short (none reach the four-minute mark). Having said all this, one might expect Sax ala Carter! to resemble cocktail jazz, but it doesn't. Instead, the listener is treated to an intimate set made up of fine ensemble work by Carter, pianist Jimmy Rowles, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Mel Lewis on favorites like "Far Away Places," "I Should Care," and "Everything I Have Is Yours." The solos by Carter and Rowles are compact, with both players sticking close to the melody line. Nonetheless, their solos are tastefully energetic and achieve an air of grace. Standouts include a bouncy take on "All or Nothing at All" and a soulful version of "I'll Never Smile Again." The walking bass of Vinnegar also adds buoyancy to the performances on Sax ala Carter!, guaranteeing that the music is always flowing freely. The 2004 release of the album adds three bonus cuts, "Ennui" and two takes of "Friendly Islands." Incredibly, this entire album was recorded in one day on February 5, 1960. A fun treat. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

Monday Michiru / Various Artists Recollections CD
Quintessence: New York (1936-1948) album for sale Seamless DJ assmeblage of the transpacific singer's popular material. 2001, Japanese import.
As an accompanying volume (sold separately) to her compilation Selections '97-'00, composer, singer, songwriter, producer, and arranger Monday Michiru showcases her club side on this wonderful volume of covers, mixes, live tracks, and B-sides. Offering another view of this wildly talented diva, Recollections puts together some of her harder-to-find 12" tracks in addition. The set opens with a remix of a live version of "Double Image" at Manic One. Appearing on the Premium Mix album, this version is slightly different in that it strips away some of that version's heavier production (on the beat side mostly), and heads, with its awesome trumpet riff and easy backbeat, into deep soul-jazz turf. Next is a version of the Jackson 5's "I Wanna Be Where You Are," from a long out-of-print Jacksons tribute, with a killer acoustic slide guitar groove courtesy of Adam Rodgers. There is also a version of "Play It By Ear," where only an acoustic guitar accompanies Michiru's vocal, lending an even silkier texture to the already velvety tune. There is also a Banda Black mix of "Chasing After the Sun," and a killer dub version of "Higher" by Joaquin Claussell. But the album's most stellar moment is on its final track, a stripped-down acoustic version of Minnie Riperton's signature song, "Lovin' You." This is the most unadorned vocal Michiru has ever cut; she misses notes and whispers through others, all to get at the same deep yet blissed-out emotion Riperton did. It caps off a stellar collection that stands as an album in its own right. ~ Thom Jurek
Japanese 2001 compilation for the club/dance, acid jazz vocalist who's worked with Basement Jaxx, Bird, Mondo Grosso, 60 Channels, Soul Bossa Trio, United Future Organization & many more. Featuring 11 of the Japanese diva's best tracks including remixes & covers. Tracks, 'Double Image' (Live At Manic One Remix), 'I Wanna Be Where You Are', 'Play It By Ear' (Naked Version), 'Yellow Bird' (Incognito Capoeira Mix), 'Chasing After The Sun' (Banda 'Black' Lero Mix), 'Tomorrow's Sunrise' (Murphy Meets Titomaxx), 'Love Flow' (Mango Margarita Mix), 'Mysteries Of Life' (Ananda Project Black Tail Dub), 'Higher' (Higher Dub), 'Sunshine After The Rain' (Maw Remix) & 'Lovin You' (Acoustic Live Version).

Ronnie Haig Jesus Music CD (2008)
Quintessence: New York (1936-1948) CD music "Jesus Music" by Ronnie Haig is an album project that I am very excited to be a part of. Ronnie Haig is a veteran rockabilly artist who early in his career was a musician at Chess Records in Chicago. Mr. Haig is a prime example of a dedicated professional musician who just keeps on getting better with age. Mr. Haig has inspired countless musicians and songwriters around the country. On this album Mr. Haig expresses his faith with his unique voice and rockabilly sound. As a friend of mine once said, "this music will knock your hat in the creek!" Better get it while you can. You'll be glad you did.
