The first of two valuable dub collections on Trojan -- part of the label's bargain, three-disc box set series -- this 50-track mix of trance-inducing sound effects and brutal rhythms chronicles the music during its '70s heyday. Selecting from a store of original sides by the likes of Gregory Isaacs and former Skatalite and tenor great Tommy McCook, dub originator King Tubby and protégés Scientist and Prince Jammy deliver plenty of solid version remixes, while early knob-twisters Lee Perry and "Niney" the Observer weigh in with some quality reworkings of their own. Crack-session bands the Upsetters, the Aggrovators, the Revolutionaries, and the Roots Radics all come off sounding like the real bedrock of reggae, as space-probe interjections bounce off heavy, heavy bass and drums. A quality dub primer perfect for reggae newcomers. ~ Stephen Cook

$30.29 Guaranteed to drive the purists around the bend, this budget-priced box set skimps on the packaging, but does make up for it with 50 tracks spread across three CDs. As the cynical have learned to expect, although advertised as a ...
| | Trojan Roots Box Set CDs (1999) Remastered
$18.59 "Unlike other forms of Jamaican music, 'Roots Reggae' has no precise definition," state the skimpy sleeve notes to this budget-priced three-CD box set. That well may be, but most fans would sum up roots as a late-'70s style exemplified by ...

| | Trojan Dub Box Set Vol. 2 CDs (2000) Limited Edition

| | Trojan Dub Rarities Box CDs (2005) Remastered
$14.25 After two other three-disc budget sets of dub, Trojan must be out of crucial tracks, right? Hardly, and in this case, "rarities" doesn't mean "curio," either. Discs one and two far outshine disc three, but Trojan Dub Rarities Box is ...

| | Monkey Cruel Tutelage CD (2005)
