| | Lava Baby Big Muff CD Lava Baby Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Like Joan Jett, Debbie Harry, and the Go-Go's, Lava Baby exudes sex appeal wrapped in powerful pop melodies. With tight harmonies, catchy tunes, no-frills up-tempo arrangements, and unabated enthusiasm, this band of three girls and two guys never strays far from the verse-chorus-bridge-verse-chorus song structure that has stood as the foundation of rock & roll ever since Ed Sullivan banned Elvis' pelvis on national television. Sure the guitars are turned up and the rhythm section is whip-smart, but the secret weapon on this disc is Jen Salzman's keyboard. Whereas most basic rock ensembles rely on guitar solos or twisted blues riffs, Salzman tosses in cute synth lines and acoustic piano voicings that embellish each song with charm and Brill Building appeal, especially on "Do It Tonight." There's sex ("Valentine"), sex ("Sex Junkie"), sex ("Bye Bye My Love"), and a spirited sexy cover of Neil Finn's Split Enz classic "I Got You." The final cut, "She Loves You," is the kind of ballad one would expect from Joni Mitchell had she grown up listening to the Ramones. Those who don't like this record probably don't like rock & roll. ~ Tom Semioli

Big Muff CD music
$16.45 Because Gary Motley is a full time jazz educator (head of jazz studies at Emory University in Atlanta), most of his gigs have been centered around Atlanta, though he has performed with a number of nationally known artists such as Clark Terry and Eddie Daniels, and made a guest appearance on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz radio series. In addition to recording for the now defunct Intersound, Motley has issued a number of rewarding CDs for his own label, including these trio sessions with a pair of Atlanta-based rhythm sections. Bassist Paul Keller contributed the brisk opener "PK's Tempo," with the composer providing an intricate supporting line for the leader's cooking solo, which will invite comparisons to a young Oscar Peterson. The pianist composed the upbeat ballad "A New Song" and adds a surprising funky interpretation of the Christmas carol "Little Drummer Boy." Motley's wife, vocalist Veronica Tate, offers an emotional take of "Poor Butterfly" that also swings up a storm; their chemistry together reaches its peak ...
