Woody Herman, almost alone among the veteran bandleaders of the swing era, went out of his way to keep an open mind toward new developments in jazz and pop music. This particular LP dismayed many of Herman's longtime fans, because it found his orchestra performing such numbers as "Macarthur Park" (before Maynard Ferguson discovered it), "Light My Fire," "I Say a Little Prayer" and Smokey Robinson's "Here I Am, Baby." Richard Evans contributed the arrangements and two originals including "Impressions of Strayhorn," a feature for Herman's alto and clarinet. The other soloists include tenors Sal Nistico and Frank Vicari. Although a sincere effort, the end results often sound a little silly, as one would expect in encountering Woody Herman's Big Band playing the Doors. [Originally released 1968, Light My Fire was reissued in 2000.] ~ Scott Yanow
Here's a live recording from Italy in 1969 which includes storming versions of "Light My Fire," "Hey Jude" and some of his hits from previous decades.
Recorded in 1969.
Personnel includes: Woody Herman (clarinet, alto saxophone).

Light My Fire album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," ...

| | Frank Wess Quartet CD (1960)
Light My Fire songs
$8.49 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights Flanagan's elegant piano, with the rhythm switching gears as Wess works his magic on flute. Flanagan alone introduces the dreamy ...
| | Terry Gibbs 52ND & Broadway: Songs Of The Bebop Era CD (2004)
Light My Fire album
$14.59 Terry Gibbs has left an indelible mark on the jazz world since 1947. With more than 65 albums to his credit and as the creator of over 300 compositions, the vibist continues to impress his fans with the addition of 52nd & Broadway: Songs of the Bebop Era to his repertoire. Gibbs pays homage to the jazz artists and their timeless standards with the accompaniment of an excellent rhythm section, a string section, and guest soloists James Moody, Nicholas Payton, Sam Most, and Tom Ranier. The 12-track recording opens with Monk's "Round Midnight," which Gibbs treats as a bossa nova. With two superior solos and sublime call and response from Gibbs on vibes and Payton on trumpet, this song is both reflective and buoyant. On Lester Young's blues "Jumping With Symphony Sid," tenor saxophonist master James Moody and Gibbs compliment each other with their bouncing bebop elements and share that personal quality so essential in great jazz. No homage to the Bebop Era would be complete without "Groovin' High," one of the signature songs from the time period. Great soloing from Gibbs, Payton, ...
| | Herb Ellis Concord Jazz Heritage Series CD (1998)
Light My Fire CD music
$9.89 Recorded between 1972 and 1988. Includes liner notes by Scott Yanow.
With the exception of a 1988 version of "Blue Moon" (a duet with bassist Red Mitchell), all of the music on this 1998 retrospective CD is from the early days of the Concord label, including one track ("Look for the Silver Lining") from the very first Concord release. Guitarist Herb Ellis recorded frequently for Concord in the 1970s and '80s, but many of his sessions were rather lazy and introspective (if not dull). Fortunately, most of the music on this reissue has more energy than usual, and in some ways this can be considered the best of Herb Ellis in the 1970s. Ellis is mostly heard in hornless trios and quartets (other than an appearance by trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison on "Easter Parade"). Among his sidemen are pianists Ross Tompkins and Monty Alexander; bassists Ray Brown, George Duvivier, and Monty Budwig; drummer Jake Hanna; ...
| | Ronnie Milsap Sings His Best Hits For Capitol Records CD (1996)
Light My Fire music CDs
$7.99 As the title suggests, Ronnie Milsap's Sings His Best Hits for Capitol Records consists of re-recorded versions of ten of his biggest hits -- including "Lost in the Fifties Tonight," "Snap Your Fingers," "(I'm A) Stand by Your Woman Man" and "(There's) No Gettin' over Me" -- which were all originally recorded for RCA Records. Though these new versions aren't particularly bad, they are neither as good or familiar as the originals, making it collection to avoid, especially if you're looking for a strong hits collection. ~ Thom Owens
As the title suggests, Ronnie Milsap's ...
| | Paul Taylor Pleasure Seeker CD (1997)
Light My Fire songs
$10.75 From his swaying and suggestive onstage body movement to conceptualizing the electro-psychedelic cover art for his latest album Pleasure Seeker (Countdown/Unity), saxman Paul Taylor seems determined to captivate us visually. For his breakthrough hit On the Horn, Taylor gathered some of his existing tunes and sought the production direction of Kazu Matsui; on Pleasure Seeker, Taylor chose a more collaborative approach. For the most part, he started composing the tunes from scratch with the new production team of Dino Esposito (an old college chum of Taylor's) and Scot Rammer. While Taylor's strong sense of melody and lyrical approach to his instrument has been in place since the first project, his new producers give him a unique, atmospheric sonic playground unlike any other heard on smooth jazz radio'part industrial percussion (as on the echoing simulated metal pipe taps on the opener, "Groove Zone"), ...

| | Jeff Healey Live At Montreux 1999 CD (2005)
Light My Fire CD music
$11.79 Canada's Jeff Healey burst on the scene in the late '80s with a pair of John Hiatt songs, "Angel Eyes" and "Confidence Man," drawing a good deal of attention for his unique laptop electric guitar style. A turn in the Patrick Swayze movie Roadhouse playing a down-and-dirty version of the Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" also boosted Healey's profile, but although the blind guitarist is obviously a special and gifted player, his style and approach haven't changed one bit since, which is a good thing if you love what he does, but it makes most of his releases after the impressive debut album, See the Light, seem a bit like reruns. This live set recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1999 (two tracks, a cover of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and the Healey original "That's What They Say," are from a Montreux appearance two years earlier in 1997) likewise features few surprises, although Healey has added a second guitarist (Philip Sayce for the two 1997 cuts and Pat Rush for the 1999 set) to his longtime rhythm section of Joe Rockman on bass and Tom Stephen on drums. Healey's leads on "While My Guitar Gently ...
