In John Cromwell's ALGIERS, based on the 1937 adaptation of Roger D'Ashelbe's popular French novel PEPE LE MOKO, a renowned thief has been hiding from police in the Casbah, the native quarter of Algiers, for more than two years. Inspectors Slimaine and Louvaine (Joseph Calleia and Walter Kinsgsford) see Pepe Le Moko (Charles Boyer) repeatedly, but until he strays outside the Casbah they are powerless to arrest him. Then a member of Pepe's inner circle, worried about his own safety, rats Pepe's hideout location to the police while simultaneously warning Pepe about the breach. Pepe and numerous bystanders, including attractive Gaby (Hedy Lamarr), are wounded as the band of thieves narrowly escapes the police. Gaby and Pepe begin to fall in love as the schemes to ensnare the master criminal grow deeper and more devious. This suspenseful romantic thriller, a Hollywood classic, features fine performances, a quality score, and excellent cinematography by James Wong Howe. Remake of the French film "Pepe Le Moko" (1937), directed by Julien Duvivier, and starring Jean Gabin. According to Variety, producer Walter Wanger bought world rights to the film, and retired all prints of the French original before redoing it. The film was remade yet again, as "Casbah" -- but this time it included songs. Producer, record executive, and songwriter David Foster has a long history of trying to wed commercial considerations to the lighter elements of pop music, and in young Josh Groban, whom he adopted as a protégé in late 1998 when the singer was 17, he is trying to get in on the classical crossover market effectively occupied by the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, and Charlotte Church (who duets with Groban on "The Prayer" here). Groban has a rich voice that falls somewhere between a low tenor and a high baritone, and Foster has here crafted or commissioned music that will sound classical to the ears of non-classical fans, much of it with lyrics in Italian to complete the effect.
