UNION is an 11-track 2002 release by Dutch progressive metal band Arabesque, featuring "Freaking," "Haunted," and "Heal Me."
With The Union, Arabesque has presented an album that showcases their brand of keyboard-infused progressive metal. It sometimes brings to mind Fates Warning meets Dream Theater. At times, the textures wander into near fusion territory, and at other times, come across as almost in the Candlemass/Black Sabbath vein. The dual female vocals are the real sticking point here. Their texture reminds one at most times almost of a cross between Rik Emmett, Geddy Lee and Annie Haslam, but they can be a bit much to take. Since the group began as an instrumental outfit, one might wonder if they should have remained in that format. Merriam-Webster defines the noun "arabesque" as "an elaborate and intricate pattern." Surely the band's complex arrangements and instrumental textures fit into this definition. Indeed, the music presented here is quite strong in the prog-metal vein, but the vocals detract from the enjoyment rather than enhance it. ~ Gary Hill

BIOGRAPHY -- In 2003 brothers Justin and John Peloian formed the band APEYGA. They began to create songs based on musical ideas Justin had originated a couple years earlier, during his Graduate work in Visual Arts. As the compositions began to develop, it was clear that the band's direction would be an Instrumental Fusion. While John was completing his M.A. in Psychology, they began to perform as a Duo at open mics. In between singer songwriter, and stand up comedians, they would plug the electric guitar and bass into the house P.A., and play their songs. The response was great, and they were asked to have their first show at the Rainbow Bar and Grill on Sunset Blvd. At that show, the sound-man, Jeff Justice asked if he could record them. So, APEYGA's first music was recorded as a guitar, bass Duo at Great Spirit Studios in West Los Angeles, California. This demo CD, entitled "Instrumentals for Guitar and Bass", was then used to audition drummers.In 2004 drummer Colin Popadiuk joined the band. With his back round in Punk and Math Rock, he added flare and soul-full drum parts to the Duo's songs. With their new Trio, APEYGA began to perform in Los Angeles and the South Bay. ...

Any number of U.K. musical performers who found fame in the 1970s did so after apprenticeships of one kind or another in the '60s -- Elton John most famously, with acts like Simon Dupree. His Lion King lyrical collaborator Tim Rice plowed similar furrows, as well as producing and songwriting before Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar helped make his and Andrew Lloyd Webber's names. That's My Story is an overview of his late-'60s work, both on his own and working for and with others, including a number of other soon-to-be-familiar names such as Lloyd Webber and Murray Head. Rice's professional solo debut , a 21-track collection, opens and closes with the title track, with the latter appearing in Spanish! -- showing that Rice himself was a fine enough singer, though his slightly downbeat vocals don't quite jibe with the polite post-Beatles rock & roll backing. But both his efforts and more notably, those of other performers here show that he had an aptitude for the kind of theatrical pop/rock that acts like the Walker Brothers and Paul & Barry Ryan helped make famous, and which makes his later musical successes understandable in context. Nothing on the disc is truly a lost classic as such, but it's a disc of enjoyable moments, including the two tracks that Head wrote and performed -- one called, with sunny spite, "You Bore Me" -- and six collaborations with Lloyd Webber, most famously the splashy, Mike Leander-produced Ross Hannaman single "Down Thru Summer," which was much later reworked into Evita's "Buenos Aires." Play this album next to Purple's post-Gillan 1975 release Come Taste the Band, and it becomes clear just how superior some of Gillan's solo albums were. Those who like Gillan for melodic yet blistering heavy metal won't be disappointed by "Sleeping on the Job," "Unchain Your Brain," and other inspired, high-octane rockers.
