Presented in very intriguing fashion are filmed performances of the greatest pianists of the 20th century (with some notable exceptions --e.g. Serkin, Gieseking, Schnable) who are no longer with us. These pianists are recalled with reverie by a group of present day pianists. The point is often made in this documentary that the great pianists used speed only as a jumping off point and that true technical genius is to found in their ability to achieve profound musical results effortlessly. We hear Rachmaninoff, Hoffman, Cortot, Backhaus, Hess, Horowitz, Gould, Arrau and others in performances that can only be called transcendental. As is often bemoaned in this film, alas, the golden age of pianism is behind us.

 Great documentary
Great overview of the century's great pianist. Rare footage and interviews. The sound quality varies, but for the most part, it is good. The rare footage of certain pianists certainly makes up for it and it is highly entertaining. If love classical music, this is for you.

 interesting dvd
this dvd is very interesting.it's a document that it need to take it at home because, studing the piano ,mean to know artists of the pass too ,the story and so we can find it in it.the only thing i would find in it and in the other dvd is the italian translation.bye from stefano
