Bodas De Engano music CDs
$16.69 They're aptly called the Young Son Rebels, although they don't exactly scrawl over the face of the classic Cuban genre. But being young, they do bring a freshness and energy to the music, along with a sense of modernism that doesn't go amiss. They're also very adept, with some wonderful trumpet -- an homage to ...

| | Daddy Yankee Barrio Fino En Directo CDs (2005) Parental Advisory
Bodas De Engano album
$13.09 Daddy Yankee was one of the leading figures of the reggaeton movement in the mid-2000s, and this dual-disc compilation package is a testament to the Puerto Rican rapper's talent and popularity. BARRIO FINO EN DIRECTO namechecks Daddy Yankee's immensely popular BARRIO FINO album, and several tracks from that album are featured here in live concert versions. Also included on the CD are four new studio cuts, including "Gangsta Zone," with Snoop Dogg, and "Machete Reloaded," with Paul Wall. The presence of these mainstream hip-hop artists shows just how far reggaeton was able to cross over.
On both the live audio tracks and the live footage included on the DVD, it's clear that Daddy Yankee is a first-rate and much-loved performer (his arena-sized audiences sing along with every word). The high-energy music, which draws on dancehall rhythms, hip-hop attitude, and Latin-flavored samples and accents, is as infectious here as on any of Daddy Yankee's releases. Fans won't want to miss this key overview.
The DVD also includes ...

| | Machel Montano Any Minute Now CD (1999)
Bodas De Engano music CDs
$12.65 As part of soca music's young vanguard, Machel Montano has helped change the sound of a genre that has basically remained unchanged for the last 40 years. By adding dancehall influences along with a hip and sophisticated sensibility, this young singer has rejuvenated soca, prompting the music which was once regulated to Carnival time, to be played all year round in his native Trinidad. Montano's innovation is in abundant display on Any Minute Now. He offers a brilliant remake of U2's hit, "With or Without You," toasts in French on "Mocking Meh," and borrows from the pop classic, "Grazing in the Grass," for the relaxed "February." Although the dancehall overtones are slightly tedious at times, this album definitely qualifies as a soca standout. ~ Rosalind Cummings-Yeates
Personnel: Machel Montano (vocals, keyboards, percussion, programming, drum programming, background vocals); Joseph Rivers (vocals, guitar); Red Rat, Beenie Man (vocals); Tony Kelly (keyboards); Danny Browne, ...
| | Banda Jerez Billete Verde CD (2005)
Bodas De Engano songs
$12.45 There was a time when many younger Mexicans considered banda old-fashioned; it was, like mariachi, music that abuelito (grandpa) listened to while his nietos (grandchildren) were off in another room cranking Carlos Santana. But the banda boom of the '90s and 2000s gave banda a younger, hipper, more modern and cutting-edge image -- and one of the groups that has been on banda's cutting edge is Banda Jerez. If any outfit can be considered a banda equivalent of Los Tigres del Norte, Grupo Exterminador, or Los Tucanes de Tijuana -- three of the most gutsy and edgy groups in norteño -- it is the controversial Jerez, whose Billete Verde doesn't pull any punches lyrically. This CD brings the in-your-face yet humorous approach of Los Tigres and Exterminador to the brassy banda style, and lead singer Marco Antonio Flores commands attention whether he is singing about adultery on "Arrinconamela," drunken partying on "Sabado de Gloria" and "Cerveza Helada," or drugs and crime on the narco-corrido "Trato del Diablo." These guys take banda to the extreme -- not only because of their lyrics, but also because of their relentless exuberance. Of course, Jerez have their critics; some Mexicans have argued that Mexico ...
