Daddy Yankee was one of the leading figures of the reggaeton movement in the mid-2000s, and this dual-disc compilation package is a testament to the Puerto Rican rapper's talent and popularity. BARRIO FINO EN DIRECTO namechecks Daddy Yankee's immensely popular BARRIO FINO album, and several tracks from that album are featured here in live concert versions. Also included on the CD are four new studio cuts, including "Gangsta Zone," with Snoop Dogg, and "Machete Reloaded," with Paul Wall. The presence of these mainstream hip-hop artists shows just how far reggaeton was able to cross over.
On both the live audio tracks and the live footage included on the DVD, it's clear that Daddy Yankee is a first-rate and much-loved performer (his arena-sized audiences sing along with every word). As part of soca music's young vanguard, Machel Montano has helped change the sound of a genre that has basically remained unchanged for the last 40 years. By adding dancehall influences along with a hip and sophisticated sensibility, this young singer has rejuvenated soca, prompting the music which was once regulated to Carnival time, to be played all year round in his native Trinidad. Montano's innovation is in abundant display on Any Minute Now. There was a time when many younger Mexicans considered banda old-fashioned; it was, like mariachi, music that abuelito (grandpa) listened to while his nietos (grandchildren) were off in another room cranking Carlos Santana. But the banda boom of the '90s and 2000s gave banda a younger, hipper, more modern and cutting-edge image -- and one of the groups that has been on banda's cutting edge is Banda Jerez. If any outfit can be considered a banda equivalent of Los Tigres del Norte, Grupo Exterminador, or Los Tucanes de Tijuana -- three of the most gutsy and edgy groups in norteño -- it is the controversial Jerez, whose Billete Verde doesn't pull any punches lyrically.
