Initial pressings included an Enhanced bonus disc. Personnel: Monica, Tyrese (vocals); Jermaine Dupri, Missy Elliott, Mia X, DMX (rap vocals); Bryan Michael Cox, Rodney "Darkchild" Jenkins, Soulshock, Karlin (various instruments); Eric Jackson, William Odum, RJ, Tommy Martin, Charles Pettaway (guitar); Bam, Ryan (keyboards, drums, programming); Montez Arnold, Dominique (keyboards); Tweet, Shamora Crawford, New Birth Praise Team (background vocals). Producers include: Missy Elliott, DJ Scratchator, Craig X, Spike, Jamal. If the gap between Monica's first and second albums wasn't long enough, After the Storm followed nearly five years after its predecessor. That's an extended period of inactivity by anyone's standards, let alone a still-young performer whose first two albums went multi-platinum. Despite that often problematic issue, After the Storm picks up where The Boy Is Mine left off with nary a speed bump. Rather than come across as if there's lost time being made up, the album has all the assuredness and smart developments that should keep Monica's younger longtime followers behind her -- all the while holding the ability to appeal to a wider spectrum of R&B and hip-hop fans. The batch of Missy Elliott-produced songs -- "Get It Off," "So Gone," "Knock Knock" -- provide a bulk of the most exciting material, with just the right amount of swagger added to the singer's more wide-eyed personality of the '90s. Another promising aspect is that Monica did a fair amount of the composing herself; while not every tune is solid, "I Wrote This Song" can go toe to toe with any of the hits she's had written for her. The only significant factor working against her is that snail's-pace release schedule. ~ Andy Kellman After then-teenaged Monica waited an unusual three years to follow up her 1995 platinum debut MISS THANG with THE BOY IS MINE and scored one of the biggest crossover hits ever with that sophomore effort's title track, she waited five years to drop her third album, AFTER THE STORM. There's something to the whole slow-and-steady thing, and while the record was consigned to the "notoriously delayed" bin for awhile, it was seemingly not for anything lacking in the album itself. Monica possesses a sultry, multi-octave voice and knows how to wield it to great effect. On AFTER THE STORM, the singer is furnished with the perfect songs around which to wrap her imperious voice. Monica even shows off her own songwriting chops on deft tunes like the swaying, melodic "I Wrote This Song" and the forcefully catchy "Ain't Gonna Cry No More." Each track is lushly and elegantly produced by some of the best in the game; of particular note are Missy Elliott's cuts (and check her guest rap on the infectious "Knock Knock"). AFTER THE STORM proves worth its wait, a solid third step by one of the shining young voices of R&B. My favorite album in English! I usually don't like American music, because most of it is shallow, dull, and boring. Besides most of the artists that receive airplay in Mexico used to be brainless/voiceless white "pop stars" such as Britney Spears & Avril Lavigne. After a friend of mine introduced me Monica, I instantly felt her vibe and the message of her songs. One of my favorites is "I Wrote This Song," which showcases Monica saying goodbye to her late boyfriend; its meaning can be applied to the loss of any relative or friend because of its emotional universality. The Missy Elliott produced songs "So Gone," "Knock Knock," and "Get It Off" are the best songs on the album; no doubt why they are so popular. "U Should've Known Better" is an excellent song, which mixes guitar sounds and Monica's strong vocals. An A+ overall album with excellent collaborations with legends such as DMX & Busta Rhymes. #1 Album! Monica is back after 5 years, a Grammy Award, 10 million albums sold, two 3X Platinum albums "Miss Thang" & "The Boy Is Mine," and five #1 hit singles.
The R&B vocalist was blessed (and rescued) by Missy Elliott with "Knock, Knock" & "So Gone," the #1 lead single on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.
Monica claimed the #1 spot on The Billboard 200 with the debut of her 3rd album, "After the Storm;" which sold 186,000 copies. The Billboard 200 showing is Monica's first-ever #1 album position, besting the #8 debut of her triple-platinum release, "The Boy Is Mine". That album also debuted at #2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
She disloged Luther Vandross' Dance With My Father from the top spot.
After a phase of personal and profesional tragedies; Monica has recovered her success "After The Storm." Submitted by fero_pri (Mexico City) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Roots Manuva has never lacked for critical respect from his British public -- a MOBO award for his debut, a Mercury nomination (and heavily favored to win) for his second -- but if he ever wished to crash the charts from Brooklyn to Bengal, 2005 was the year to do it. The success of British rap in general, and grime or Dizzee Rascal in particular, appeared to grant him the perfect point of entry into the greater world of pop music. The concept was even more perfect considering that the bashment style pioneered by Roots and his alter ego, producer Lord Gosh, was a natural fit for any Dizzee fans unaware of his hard-hitting, dubwise, digitalic work (which must have been an influence on a few grime producers). Instead, Roots Manuva decided to pull way back and record an introverted, ...
