THE SEEDS OF LOVE completes a trilogy familiar to many careers: the tentative debut, the fully realized follow-up, and the grandiose third album. Four years in the making, it bears all the scars of struggle and indecision and is a fascinating account of a band torn between taking shelter in an MOR cocoon and fighting the zeitgeist that threatens to consign the band to the past.
"Badman's Song" opts for safety, reveling in a sophisticated lethargy. "Sowing the Seeds Of Love" is an unashamed Beatles pastiche that predates Oasis' "All Over the World" by almost a decade, and the solemn "Woman in Chains" features Phil Collins whilst also introducing Oleta Adams. "Year of the Knife" is perhaps the focal point of the tension. Its admirable flamboyance makes for more fun than could be expected from a half-live, three-part, seven-minute swaggering rock & roll track packed with guitar solos. Each track is a five-minute-plus mini-drama with moments of delicacy and discomfort, restraint and excess, inspiration and creative exhaustion. As the last album to feature Curt Smith, it is a fitting end to an era. The 1998 remastered edition includes four bonus tracks.
Tears for Fears' third album was their third -- and, in many ways, their most impressive -- pop masterpiece in a row, which was lucky, because it had a production history that made the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's look like a spontaneously generated single. Released nearly five years before his violent death at the hands of thieves in 1987, MAMA AFRICA was the last studio album of new material released in Peter Tosh's lifetime. From his days as one of the original Wailers in the '60s, Tosh was one of Jamaican music's most outspoken and controversial artists. Though his former partner Bob Marley never shied away from political or social statements himself, Tosh eschewed Marley's gift for metaphor and parable in favor of such explicitly political slogans as the legendary "Legalize It."
MAMA AFRICA features the similarly plainspoken anti-nuclear "Peace Treaty," complete with falling-bombs sound effects. The single, a reggae remake of "Johnny B. Goode," was a radio success. While it might seem on the surface to be a crass commercial move to remake a rock classic, Tosh's sly, dread-filled delivery makes plain the racial and social subtext of Chuck Berry's lyrics.
Peter Tosh's most "accessible" solo album, Mama Africa would also be his top seller outside Jamaica, the only one of his albums to break into the U.K. Top 50 and even push into the bottom reaches of the U.S. chart. The newest release from Alex Radeff & Donkey.Founded by singer/songwriter/guitarist Alex Radeff as a vehicle for his eclectic songs, Donkey is an original rock/pop group based in Toronto. The music ranges from melodic hard rock to soft pop ballads, each song from a unique songwriting perspective. The project first gathered critical praise with two independent releases in the mid/late 90's. High profile media figures such as Moses Znaimer, Gary Topp, and Q107's Al Joynes heard and supported the group's musical/artistic direction. The College Music Journal reviewed Radeff as 'something of a guitar genius'.
