The world music bin at the record store is a depository for all non-Western sounding musics. From field recordings of Australian aborigines spinning bull-roarers in a ritual context to studio-produced fusion musics that use an occasional tabla sample for the sake of added exoticism, the world music category catches them all. On Hollow Bamboo, celebrated bansuri player Ronu Majumdar tunes into a few of the different bandwidths offered within the world music spectrum. With half of the tracks he grounds his playing in traditional Hindustani works. Accompanied by the penetrating tabla playing of Abhijit Banerjee on most of these cuts, Majumdar whips up stunning melodic gusts that swirl in and out of time with the tabla. The other four tracks are experimental collaborations with trumpeter Jon Hassell, guitarists Rick Cox and Ry Cooder, and percussionist Joachim Cooder. "A Day for Trade Winds," a song formed upon richly textured guitar drones, is the most successful of these four fusion tracks because guitarists Cox and Cooder lay back and let Majumdar develop subtle, yet sophisticated, melodies. "African Queen" is a less successful hybrid, due in part to the fact that Joachim Cooder's hand drumming drowns out the superior playing of Banerjee. Whatever the contributions of his collaborators may be, Ronu Majumdar's sensitive performance on the hollow, bamboo bansuri makes this CD a great listen, no matter what end of the world music spectrum you're coming from. ~ John Vallier

Ricky Martin jump-started the early 21st century Latin pop explosion in early 1999 with his spirited, hip shaking appearance on the Grammy Awards. On SOUND LOADED, Martin's music has progressed and improved, while maintaining the vitality and rhythmic diversity of its predecessor. The album is a mix of party anthems, straight-ahead, hook-laden pop tunes, and tender, emotional ballads. Martin here has spared no expense in creating an album to satisfy his legions of fans.
"She Bangs" is the sequel to "Livin' La Vida Loca," a sexy, exciting, catchy song about a free and intense angel. "Saint Tropez," with its trumpets and strings, is a smooth, tropical groove. "Come To Me" could be Martin's best ballad yet, a tender tune with background vocals arranged ...

Continuing in Water Lily Acoustics' series of sitting down musicians from different musical traditions to find common ground (which reached its pinnacle with the awe-inspiring collaboration of Ry Cooder and V.M. Bhatt on A Meeting by the River), Kambara Music joins guitarist Martin Simpson with Los Lobos singer/guitarist David Hidalgo, violinist/vocalist Viji Krishnan, and mridangam player Puvalur Srinivasan. It is an intriguing combination, but it is not as effective as one would have hoped. The first problem is the choice of material. The group has elected to open with Richard Thompson's "Waltzing's for Dreamers," with Simpson himself singing the tune's folky, bittersweet melody. Although his guitar playing could arguably rival Thompson's own, vocally he does not have the depth of expression necessary to pull off this great song. Simpson's voice is simply not up to snuff, and considering that Hidalgo, who is a very soulful singer (and a proven strong interpreter of Thompson's material at that) is present on this date, the production decision made here doesn't make much sense. The Los Lobos frontman, also a great guitar player in his own right who plays no guitar on this record, instead contributes wistful accordion in keeping with the spirit of the Mitchell Froom-supplied harmonium on the original. Where this group succeeds is in the long, hypnotic repetition of songs, such as Hidalgo's "The Slow Pageant," which, true to its name, unfolds deliberately and seductively as Simpson and Krishnan trade simple melodic lines over Hidalgo's bajo sexto ostinato and Srinivasan's gentle percussion. ...
