| | Gazetteers Territory Songs CD Gazetteers Discography of CDs
Frank Boscoe, formerly of Vehicle Flips and Wimp Factor 14, recruited Rob Christiansen (Sisterhood of Convoluted Thinkers, ex-Eggs) and Steve Silverstein (also of the band Christmas Decorations) in 2002 for the debut of Boscoe's new musical identity, as the vocalist of the Gazetteers. Originally conceived as an epic with 57 songs about the 50 United States and seven U.S. territories, Boscoe, who has a doctorate in geography, narrowed the project's focus down to nine tracks and one cover song. The disc opens with "Now Let Us Flee," a whimsical track about a couple deciding to flee from the gulf coast of Florida. "Vacationland" serves as a catchy tourism commercial for the state of Maine, while "Rainbow Warriors" is a humorous commentary on the University of Hawaii's football team. "Palm Meadows" chronicles a South Carolina retirement community, while "Come Play in Aberdeen!" sounds like an attempt to lure touring indie rock bands to play in South Dakota. The disc ends with a subdued cover of Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne's "Poor Little Rhode Island." Like the last few Vehicle Flips releases, the music is often minimal, favoring simple tones over convoluted ones. Boscoe favors the ukulele over guitar on some songs, while Christiansen and Silverstein serve as multi-instrumentalists, fulfilling some of the group's guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and backing vocal duties. Jeannine Durfee and Paul Boscoe guest on background vocals. Magic Marker Records released Territory Songs in August 2002. ~ Stephen Cramer

Territory Songs
$14.49 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off ...

| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Territory Songs
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward ...

| | Gregg Allman No Stranger To The Dark: The Best CD (2002) (Import) Japan
Territory Songs
$27.85 Recorded between 1985 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Jaan Uhelszki.
Even if you accept that a best-of for Gregg Allman can focus wholly on his solo career (as this one does) and not include any of his work with the Allman Brothers, this could not by any stretch be considered "the best of Gregg Allman." It's really the best of what he's recorded for Sony, which is really an entirely different animal. That means there's nothing from his three 1970s albums, which most listeners would view as containing his best solo work; the chronological stretch on this comp only covers the last half of the 1980s and the 1990s. Like, say, Rod Stewart, this was a time in which his recordings had really only a shadow of their old power, although (like Stewart) his voice was still in good shape ...
