This one-name-only new age upstart -- who, as the son of a UN diplomat, grew up in places like Cuba, Switzerland, and Afghanistan -- creates a wide range of musical atmospheres and exotica around the core of his beautiful acoustic piano. Most of this kind of music is pleasant and very predictable, but Omar is more about unexpected twists and turns. The opening track, "Sugar Coated Love," begins gently and builds slowly toward a rich orchestral crescendo before exploding into a (synthesized) rhythmic jam featuring the sound of an oboe; what opens as a ballad becomes a spry piano number. "Morning Rain" doesn't get quite as bouncy, but breaks from the tender, melancholy opening into a pop/rock piece complete with electric guitar crackle. "Last Dance" incorporates a little flamenco, slightly reminiscent of some of Raśl DiBlasio's work. "Farewell for Now" draws more on Omar's classical background, but doesn't forsake his obvious passion for rock. Other numbers sound like pure, sweeping film scores. It's the rare new ager who can find unique ways to keep songs interesting all the way through, but Omar manages to do the trick. Very promising. ~ Jonathan Widran

Opal Fire album
$11.99 While its predecessor, 2005's HOPE AND DESIRE, found blues-rocker Susan Tedeschi getting on a soul train, BACK TO THE RIVER represents that phrase beloved by hardcore fans of any artist, "a return to form." Tedeschi is back to the hard-hitting, bluesy sound with which she made her name, and her joy at this stylistic homecoming ...
| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) SDTK
Opal Fire CD music
$9.25 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from ...

| | Big Maceo Merriweather Volume 2 (1945-1950) CD (2004) Import
Opal Fire CD music
$13.39 This is the second and final volume in Document's chronological treatment of Big Maceo Merriweather's complete recorded works, and while it isn't quite as essential as the first installment, it still provides a nice glimpse of a pianist and vocalist who played a huge roll in creating the template for what would come to be known as the Chicago blues. The opening track, "Maceo's 32-20," is pretty much typical, with Maceo's limited but assured vocals riding his thundering barrelhouse piano playing, accompanied by longtime friend Tampa Red on guitar and Tyrell "Little T" Dixon on drums. The same personnel appear on the next three tracks as well, all recorded on July 5, 1945. Maceo suffered a severe stroke in 1946, however, which left his right side paralyzed, so it is truly remarkable that he returned to the studio in 1947, this time with Eddie Boyd on piano, and while Maceo contributed only vocals, Boyd copied his previous stride style so well that the middle tracks here flow seamlessly from the earlier ones, and when Johnny Jones took over on piano a year later, again, it all feels cut from the same cloth. Unfortunately, the final seven tracks on the disc, Maceo's last, cut for Fortune Records in 1950, are only of demo quality. Big Maceo played the left-hand piano parts and James ...

| | Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz It's Tight Like That CD (2007)
Opal Fire album
$18.95 Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz is a diverse group of musicians from Southern California, who perform high-energy blues, rock & soul. Their first CD, trunk full of bluez, was released January 2004 to rave reviews. BLUSD (Blues Lovers United San Diego) chose Aunt Kizzyāz Boyz to represent San Diego in the 2006 IBC (International Blues Challenge). The Boyz took 2nd place in the competition in Memphis TN, where they competed with 130 bands from around the world. They also recently opened for Etta James in the Pechanga Showroom to a sold out crowd where they received a standing ovation and performed an encore song. The band is also involved in the BITS (Blues In The Schools) program, and have performed for over 1,400 young kids, exposing them to live blues.Blues Critic stated in March 2006:"if you ain't got a great singer you ain't got this critic's ear. Well, the Boyz got themselves a serious blues-shouter who goes by the name Sugaray Rayford. Hailing from Tyler Texas, Sugaray possesses one of those powerful ,gospel-soaked voices that can take the meekest of songs and improve it. He and his mates start their debut disc, "Trunk Full Of Bluez", on the good foot with a ripping 12-bar blues shuffle called "Jelly Roll". Sugaray comes-a wailing' and guitarist Jim King shreds mightily over the racing groove, courtesy of bassist Joe Schiavone and drummer Duane Hathorn. And their show stopping version of Albert King's "Rub My Back". This track sizzles! Dare I say it even eclipses King's version and this is coming from a serious Albert King admirer!āLead guitarist, Jim King's solo debut album, WHEN THE BLUES ARE GREEN garnered rave reviews & he recently signed with Grooveyard Records for distribution of this CD. "Blues Revue" magazine stated: ...
