Phantomsmasher's output is warped and sometimes brutal on the ear -- just the kind of sounds one would expect from Mike Patton's Ipecac recordings. Even after his involvement in over 80 releases, James Plotkin continues work on his extreme "music." Much like the previous effort under the name Atomsmasher, Phantomsmasher combines grindcore with digital hardcore and experimental noise. The drum beats (it's hard to tell what is a drum machine and what is drummer Dave Witte) often spin out into ridiculously fast speeds, not unlike the digital hardcore from Atari Teenage Riot and EC8OR. Some of the wild guitar and excessively processed sounds can leave the unexpected listener irritated, but this is what Plotkin has been after for years. Listeners also get some "audiomulch" vocals from DJ Speedranch, yet there's little here that resembles a human voice. By the time the chaos is over, you're left wondering if there's any structure to the madness or if these guys are just screwing around with their toys randomly. ~ Kenyon Hopkin

Germany's Bohren & der Club of Gore are a black metal fan's lounge jazz act. Or, for those driven by the more extreme side of noir-ish ambient material, these cats lay it out with musical instruments (and a Mellotron), painfully slow and muted tempos, and a relentlessly gloomy atmosphere worthy of the first Black Sabbath album. Originally issued in 2002 on Wonder and now re-released by the great Ipecac label, Black Earth is, by the very nature of what it is, a classic. Black Earth is a wrenching, turtle-like crawl through the vast darkness of jazz balladry and unreservedly bleak nihilism. The song titles say it all: "Midnight Black Earth," "Crimson Ways," "Maximum Black," "Vigilante Crusade," "Grave Wisdom," "The Art of Coffins" -- you get the idea. All of that said, however, this music is infectiously delicious, darkly sensual, and the only tonic for a lonely brooding night. The quartet of drummer Thorsten Benning, saxophonist and pianist Christoph Closer, Mellotron operator, pianist, and Rhodes piano king Morten Gass, and double bassist Robin Rodenberg began life as a death metal hardcore act in the 1980s. Seeking a more original sound, they gradually gravitated to this incarnation of musical brilliance and mysterium organum. If the glacial dynamics of previous metal and hardcore abstractions Celestial and Oceanic didn't prove that Isis was a heavy band in every sense, then Panopticon should do the trick. The title comes from 18th century philosopher Jeremy Bentham's prison design, which was later referenced by Michael Foucault in the 20th century. The idea is that a centrally placed guard or watcher can keep track of a large number of prisoners, and it excited Bentham and concerned Foucault. Heavy stuff for a metal band, huh? Both are quoted in the liner notes, bookended by aerial industrial photos laying out society's open sprawl. It fits perfectly with the epic music on the disc itself, which is as angular as post-rock forefathers Slint and as cosmically expansive as Neurosis, yet closer to the intensity of hardcore than either of them.
