Personnel: Marian McPartland, Bill Evans (piano). Recorded on November 6, 1978. Includes liner notes by Marian McPartland. This part of The Jazz Alliance Piano Jazz series. Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Marian McPartland (piano). Recording information: 11/06/1978. Photographers: Karen Mantlo; Barbara Bordnick; Tom Copi. One of the first programs which Marian McPartland recorded for her long-running Peabody Award-winning radio series Piano Jazz remains one of her most memorable. Her guest was the phenomenal Bill Evans, just under two years before his untimely death. Evans' solo performances are outstanding, including a brief take of his best-known work, "Waltz for Debby," and his dazzling interpretation of Duke Ellington's hidden treasure "Reflections in D." McPartland proves to be an engaging interviewer, getting her guest to discuss his technique in detail and encouraging him to demonstrate specific examples as they talk. They mesh well together on their half-dozen duo piano performances, especially during a buoyant improvisation of Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way." McPartland's only solo is a delightfully off-kilter take of her good friend Alec Wilder's ballad "While We're Young." This is the third time this program has appeared on CD; this edition improves upon the earlier 1993 Jazz Alliance version by adding more striking and informative packaging, as well as correcting a typographical error in one of the song titles. Unfortunately, no unissued material has turned up. Jazz piano fans should consider this an essential purchase. ~ Ken Dryden Piano Jazz With Bill Evans Music Marian McPartland Piano Jazz With Bill Evans Songs Piano Jazz With Bill Evans Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A Rare Jewel of a Recording! I first heard this broadcast of Piano Jazz on the radio, and was amazed at the interplay between Marian Mcpartland and Bill Evans. Evans goes into incredible detail about his personal process when he improvises, and Mcpartland guides him through the interview with intelligence and taste.
After I heard the broadcast, I immediately began a search for a recording of it. My first stop was the radio station, but they led me on a merry chase through a variety of sources - eventually to a dead end. It was only after scouring the internet, and discovering CD Universe, that everything suddenly clicked into place. Astoundingly, they actually had a copy of the program for sale. Since my copy arrived three weeks ago, I have listened to the show at least three times! Submitted by rob (Toronto, ON, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Revelations in Person Though I have always been aware and admired the complexity of Bill Evans' playing, I was even more overwhelmed by the emotional quality of it all. After listening to this, I now realise that he must be approaching musical genius status in any company. To hear Marion being so staggered and overwhelmed by his playing, his construction and projection and emotion was an eye opener for me. Wonderful playing too, but an essential for any Bill Evans library. Would that we could hear these direct over here. She ranks with Willis Conover as an introducer and interviewer. The Essence of Music (Not just Jazz) When I first heard this recording a few years ago I was struck by the beauty and sophistication of the playing by both of these masters. I was also amazed at how humble Bill Evans was. My favorites are the opening tune "Waltz for Debby" which I can't even stand to hear played any other way than on this recording, and the Brubeck tune "In Your Own Sweet Way" which sounds so joyful that you almost don't want it to end. This is one of my 'deserted island and one album' choices. I would purchase it again on the strength of the conversation alone. It's like a Master Class taught by Bill Evans with Marian McPartland as the lead student. I have listened to it once a week for the last couple of years and recommend it to all my jazz buddies.
