| | Rod Hughey Misery Loves Company CD (2006)
I Have Potential: Cornerstone Ras 2002 music CDs
$9.75 Rod Hughey's musical path in life has been a dynamic journey. From open mic nights, two Kantishna Music Festivals, and bar appearances around Alaska to venues around the lower 48 to his home state of Michigan where he made several appearances sitting in with Souls, Inc., a Contemporary Christian Group. Rod moved to Alaska in the spring of 2001 to "screw his head on straight", as he likes to tell people. Living on the streets of Flint, Michigan kept him anchored to the reality that he was going to have to define his future or let the streets define it for him. The one positive he possessed and would take to Alaska was his love of music and his guitar, which he learned from his father as a teenager. He was impressed by energy of the Alaskan music scene, and it is that influence that spawned his musical journey. He enjoys playing anywhere now, and likes hanging out with fans and other artists alike. "Someone has always got a story or enthusiasm or something great that I try to take with me from every experience." His original music seems to have reflected that very philosophy from the beginning. "I just got tired of sitting around the living room by myself playing the same old riffs that had been plaguing my brain for years, sort of like a broken record" says Hughey. "I decided to write a song ("Misery Loves Company") and it turned out to be pretty entertaining", he remembers. "Next thing I knew, there was a local guy wanting to cover me. And then there was some really great feedback from Photons, one of the hottest acts in the state after an open mic. They didn't have to do that, but are all just cool guys. That was a major boost though, and I had so much fun just performing my own stuff that I decided to take my playing out of the living room and out on the road." The rest is history. He says he has had a lot of fun opening up for such songwriter/artists as Jim Sandy and Larry Zarella, Tim Easton, and Keith Sykes and doing set breaks for the Denali Cooks, Utah's Matt Lewis Band and the Gourds version of "Gin and Juice" with Smooth ...
