Following Eva Cassidy's 1996 death from cancer at the age of 33, word-of-mouth popularity in America by way of England led to a number of stellar posthumous releases mixing live and studio recordings. 2002's IMAGINE follows the same path and is no less impressive. Front and center is the late D.C. native's stellar vocal timbre that allowed her to interpret a wide range of songwriters. In the studio, she easily moved from a slinky version of Little Willie John's "Fever" (featuring interesting support on fiddle by brother Dan) to a soaring interpretation of "I Can Only Be Me," a Stevie Wonder composition originally recorded by Keith John for the SCHOOL DAZE soundtrack.
The most notable in-concert performances featured here come from intimate Annapolis venues like the King of France Tavern and defunct Pearl's. These gorgeous solo acoustic readings include the standard "Danny Boy" and Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain." Most fitting is Cassidy's take on "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" by Sandy Denny, a singer she's most often compared to. In light of the acclaimed success of the stylistically similar Norah Jones, the mind boggles at the heights Eva Cassidy might have reached had she not died at such a young age.

Rolling Stone (9/19/02, p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...An odds-and-ends collection culled from diverse sources that holds together, thanks to Cassidy's torchy interpretive genius." Q (9/02, p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...These 10 tracks are as emotionally moving as ever and will please those hungry for more of her work." Mojo (Publisher) (9/02, p.115) - "...a warts and all collection of classic songs sung by a superb interpreter...the kind of performances that make audiences feel guilty about breaking the fragile time-stopping magic by breathing too loud." Eva Cassidy - a great voice, in a personal way Eva Cassidy shows great performance on this album. And the variety in the choise of songs for "Imagine" secures, that you never get bored listening to the music. Especially in the "slow" songs and ballads, does the beutiful voice of Eva fit perfectly, and makes the small hairs on my arm and on my neck rise. I thank God in his creation of this special and beautiful voice. Hopefully we can persuate Eva to visit Denmark for a concert in the future. Beautiful! For those who may have feared another release similar to NO BOUNDARIES, you can breathe a sigh of relief. IMAGINE fits nicely into Eva's catalog and represents her true style--soulful, jazzy, and heartfelt. This collection follows the style of TIME AFTER TIME and demonstrates some of Eva's great guitar work and controlled vocals. Highly recommended for any Eva fan! What a voice! What a voice!
Danny Boy is a "must hear"!
Seems to be a little mix of genre in the song selection but her ability makes up for it.

| | Eva Cassidy Eva By Heart CD (1997)
Imagine music CDs
$13.49 An album both haunting and inspiring, tragic and mesmerizing, Eva by Heart was the singer's only true studio album, and hints at the promise which was never to materialize due to her early demise from cancer. Five of the songs on this set ("I Know You by Heart," "Time Is a Healer," "Wayfaring Stranger," "Wade in the Water," and "Songbird") appear on her Songbird collection. The import version of Eva by Heart contains an extra track, "Dark End of the Street," which does not appear on the American version, or on any of her albums for that matter. The styles range from folksy (the sweet "I Know You by Heart"), to soulful ("Time Is a Healer"), to introspective ("Say Goodbye," "Waly Waly"), to downright rousing ("Wayfaring Stranger," "How Can I Keep From Singing?") and bluesy ("Blues in the Night."). Eva's ...

In the early '50s, the Modern label made numerous blues recordings in the Deep South, with Modern executive Joe Bihari and talent scout Ike Turner acting as sort of on-the-road A&R men. Though these were recorded in settings that by later standards would be considered primitive, including living rooms, they don't conform to the stereotype of blues "field recordings." Actually they sound about on par with the fidelity of many early electric blues sides cut in Memphis, Chicago, New Orleans, and Detroit, though lacking some of the innovative techniques pioneered by Chess and Sun. ...
