Additional personnel: Ian Stewart (piano, organ); Jack Nitzsche (piano). Recorded at Chess Studios, Chicago, Illinois; RCA Studios, Hollywood, California; Regent Sound, London, England. Although their third American album was patched together (in the usual British Invasion tradition) from a variety of sources, it's their best early R&B-oriented effort. Most of the Stones' early albums suffer from three or four very weak cuts; Now! is almost uniformly strong start-to-finish, the emphasis on some of their blackest material. The covers of "Down Home Girl," Bo Diddley's vibrating "Mona," Otis Redding's "Pain in My Heart," and Barbara Lynn's "Oh Baby" are all among the group's best R&B interpretations. The best gem is "Little Red Rooster," a pure blues with wonderful slide guitar from Brian Jones (and a number one single in Britain, although it was only an album track in the U.S.). As songwriters, Jagger and Richards are still struggling, but they come up with one of their first winners (and an American Top 20 hit) with the yearning, soulful "Heart of Stone." ~ Richie Unterberger THE ROLLING STONES, NOW! is a masterpiece of early British R&B, Rolling Stones style. Things start off with a powerful rendition of Solomon Burke's signature tune "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love." Elsewhere, the Stones take a tour of American music, from Bo Diddley's "Mona," complete with choppy, reverbed guitar, to a slow, churning version of Willie Dixon's blues evergreen "Little Red Rooster," probably the first version of the song to feature fuzz bass. Amid all this esteemed company, though, the standout tracks are the Jagger-Richards originals. With its heartbreaking lyrics and poignant accompaniment, "Heart of Stone" could have been a classic soul ballad appropriated from some great, obscure American singer. On "What a Shame," the Stones prove that they don't have to look to outside sources for their blues. Keith's penetrating slide here, as on "Little Red Rooster," foreshadows greater things to come.
Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.136) - Ranked #181 in Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" NME (Magazine) (7/8/95, p.46) - 6 (out of 10) - "...The Stones of '64 and '65 may not have been the world's most accomplished musicians, but they were lean and hungry. There's a lippy arrogance that's best illustrated on ROLLING STONES NOW!, in particular the pasty-faced soul of `Pain In My Heart' and the R&B plod of `Off The Hook'..." Rolling Stones Now! Songs Now! Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Original album? This is an american original album i.e. not a "real" original album. That is the reason for the "thrown together feeling" like a compilation. I agree that the stereo takes mixed with mono takes also contributes to that feeling.
It would have been better with the whole album in mono and the stereo versions as bonus tracks. Submitted by a reviewer (Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Stones, Old School Before "Let It Bleed" came out, the Stones' best album was probably "Aftermath". But don't overlook this gem, "The Rolling Stones, Now!" Although the majority of songs were not written by Mick and Keith, some of the covers included here are priceless. The opener, "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", morphs into a straight-ahead revival chant in which the voices and instruments take turns "shouting out". In "Down Home Girl" Mick serves up a trashy, amusing portrait of a naive and amoral country lass who comes to town. "Little Red Rooster" teases you with innuendo and threatens you with guitars that "bark" and "howl". "Mona" is full of excellent tremolo guitar effect. The song "What A Shame" fits in with the others so well that I thought it was a cover until I looked and found that Mick and Keith wrote it! And this collection includes the Stones' first song that got my attention, the brutal "Heart Of Stone". As for the remastered sound, compared to my LP from 1965 it sounds great, and frankly, I don't think any more could have been done with a 1964 recording. Fans of old-style rock and roll should love this album. But for the Stones, big-time sophistication was just around the corner. Submitted by stevenx9 (Mandeville, LA USA) Was This Review Helpful? what gives with the first track to this cd? the first song on this cd has been replaced with a stereo version that is not the original take. its a very substandard take of the original. now i gotta go out and find one of the old versions of this disc and rebuy it. the stereo mixes on this album make the mono ones sound like this album was thrown together. why not all stereo. come on do it right or dont do it at all and put back the first song the way it was. next thing you know they will be erasing the bass of bill wyman and replace it with their current bass player like ozzy did with his original drummer and bass player. well now i got to go on e bay and find an old version. all the other remasters of the rolling stones sound thrown together also when they mix stereo with mono. Wow! 1965 - you must be kidding. Most music apart from Del Shannon, Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney really sucked and was disposible...The Stones were showing us signs of greater things to come. Submitted by faust8577 (Lorraine, Que. Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

The hard rock trio known as Seether has concocted an album that is ripe with vulnerable angst, as Disclaimer is a debut that follows the path that bands such as Staind and Cold have capitalized on in the 21st century. In fact, Seether's moody rock edge borders on the formerly prominent grunge style once championed by another trio, Nirvana. This comparison may be a bit overboard, yet the first half of Seether's ...
