Burundi: Music From The Heart Of Africa album
$9.55 From the old Nonesuch Explorer series comes this album of classical Persian music, originally released in 1974 and re-released on CD in 1991. The album contains a number of nice virtuoso performances on the various instruments of the Persian classical repertoire. The ensemble leader Faramarz Payvar provides some outstanding work on the santur in most of the dastgah performances. Also, the zarb player Mohammad Esmai'li performs an amazing solo on his drum, nearly incorporating melody into the work with a single percussion instrument. The tar playing also stands ...

Burundi: Music From The Heart Of Africa CD music
$10.05 COME AWAY WITH ME won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical).
"Don't Know Why" won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Arif Mardin won the 2003 Grammy Award for Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical).
A direct descendant from the pedigree of one of the 20th century's virtuosos, Norah Jones might not be on such a lofty artistic level as her dad Ravi Shankar, but certainly inherited some musical intuition from him. With nary a sitar nor raga within earshot, the young newcomer sounds very much an assimilated, western, 21st century pop-jazz singer. One thing that separates her from the pack is Ms. Jones' own piano stylings--not flashy, but deftly doubling or echoing her voice--that discreetly act as the glue holding together these airy, delicate, and beautiful arrangements.
But the centerpiece is certainly the 22-year-old's confident-beyond-her-years vocal delivery in addition to a precise diction and velvety tone. Shades of Nina Simone, vintage Phoebe ...
| | Tom Waits Blood Money CD (2002)
Burundi: Music From The Heart Of Africa music CDs
$10.69 Contains an untitled hidden track following "A Good Man Is Hard To Find".
Like the simultaneously released ALICE, BLOOD MONEY features songs written for a Robert Wilson play. That's pretty much where the similarity ends; unlike ALICE's moody balladry, BLOOD MONEY is full of crazed, rhythmic pieces of sonic barbed-wire. The lyrics portray the main character of Wilson's WOYZECK, a man filled with madness and rage. The combination of junkyard percussion, near-psychotic vocals, and lounge-band-from-hell tones provides the perfect complement. The outlook is an unremittingly dark one, eventually bypassing existentialism ("God's Away on Business") in favor of outright misanthropy (the aptly titled "Misery is the River of the World"). The brief, Raymond Scott-like instrumental "Knife Chase" is a madcap interlude that brings the glory days of SWORDFISHTROMBONES to mind. Despite the gusto with which Waits throws himself into all this craziness, a ...
| | Explorer Series: East Africa - Witchcraft And Ritual Music CD (1991)
Burundi: Music From The Heart Of Africa songs
$10.39 This album was originally titled AFRICA: WITCHCRAFT & RITUAL MUSIC.
Recorded in Kenya and Tanzania. Originally released on Nonesuch (72066). Includes liner notes by David Fanshawe.
This album, an early portion of the Nonesuch Explorer Series, makes use of music from East Africa, primarily Kenya, with one track from Tanzania as well. Despite the title saying that witchcraft and ritual music is the focus here, there is little that would now be considered witchcraft-based, and for that manner, many of the pieces are of daily life ...

Burundi: Music From The Heart Of Africa album
$10.05 This album was originally titled SAVANNAH RHYTHMS: MUSIC OF UPPER VOLTA, VOLUME I.
Recorded in Upper Volta (Burkina Faso) in 1973-75. Originally released on Nonesuch (72087). Includes liner notes by Kathleen Johnson.
Originally released in 1981, this superb recording was part of the massive reissue program undertaken by Nonesuch in 2002. Savannah Rhythms collects a varied sampling of music from the sub-Saharan country of Burkina Faso, formerly known as Upper Volta. The balafón, a percussion instrument that is antecedent to the marimba and, possibly, the piano, is featured prominently, as on the thrilling opening track, "Allah man ...
