This album was originally titled AFRICA: ANCIENT CEREMONIES, DANCE MUSIC & SONGS OF GHANA.
Recorded in Ghana. Originally released on Nonesuch (72082). Includes liner notes by Stephen Jay.
In Ghana, as in most sub-Saharan Africa, music is an essential way of life...These selections are songs which have intricate, overlapping phrases sung in parallel harmonies, songs with musicians who use harmonics to imitate the controlled "cracking" of the voice, songs with women drumming and another where two men sit facing each other, playing the same instrument. The sounds of this album are very diversified. This recording was recorded in three separate regions on Ghana, but reflects only a small part of the rich diversity of traditional musical forms alive in Ghana today. ~ MusD
A Nonesuch re-release of music recorded in the '70s is the best general introduction to Ghanian traditional music, in that there's variety in singing styles, types of music, and instrumentation, along with excellent playing and very fine recording quality. ~ John Storm Roberts
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
This is part of the Nonesuch Explorer Series.

If you're looking for sweet singing, steel guitars, and the tourist trappings of the South Pacific, you'll need to look elsewhere. These 28 tracks are off the beaten track, but anyone keeping to the straight and narrow might find the results far more satisfying. Of particular interest are the songs and chants, like "Imenetuki," with some eerie, shifting harmonies from the ...

$13.89 Those who complain that all traditional Irish albums sound the same aren't completely wrong; although aficionados can go on at length about the stylistic differences that separate the playing of, say, Martin Hayes from that of Sean Keane, if you're not steeped in the tradition it's all going to sound like very subtle variations on a fairly repetitive theme. ...
| | Ebenus House That Funk Built CD (2007)
Ghana: Ancient Ceremonies, Dance Music & Songs album
$16.45 After considerable success in his homeland, Ebenus is ready to rock the USA. He recently took the album to WMC Miami 2007 where it received rave reviews. One panellist said: "I'd definitely play that in the clubs. When that bass comes in, it's wicked. Yeah I'm feeling it." Ebenus himself says of the album: "It wasn't something that I really thought about, it just happened. I was creating more and more tracks that sounded really good, so I said to myself, 'why don't I produce an album of this music, and it went from there." Ebenus, a native of South London, has been writing and producing for local artists for some six years now, as well as providing backing vocals for many. In short, he has been a fixture on the UK R&B circuit for over half a decade. After such a learning curve, the time is now ripe for his first long-player. ...
