Gade: Symphonies Vol 3 - No 3 & 6, Etc / Hogwood
$11.89 The Choir of Kings College, Cambridge owes its existence to King Henry VI, who instigated the daily singing of services in his chapel for both entertainment and worship. Known the world over, the ensemble is still representing an important tradition that has been around since the beginning of the College in 1448. Predominantly engaged today for singing religious services, they have garnered international fame with their incredible performances and enthusiastic renditions of popular choral music.
Conducted by Stephen Cleobury, the choir performs a selection of works that is challenging, yet very accessible to those not familiar with these hymns. Accompanied by Sioned Williams on harp, Benjamin Bayl, and Thomas Williamson on organ, the sheer power and beauty of the ensemble's range complement the darker textures portrayed by the instrumentalists. Such traditional works as "Morning Has Broken," and "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" grace the album with their simplicity, as well as the tender "The Lord's My Shepherd," and the triumphant "All People That On Earth Do Dwell." Performing with precision and clarity, the ensemble is sure to please aficionados of classic choral music. This will be considered a milestone of the genre for years to come.

$14.29 | | Christmas Around The World CDs (2002)
Gade: Symphonies Vol 3 - No 3 & 6, Etc / Hogwood
$9.69 Christmas Around the World is one of the many budget compilations available for the holidays that confounds the natural logic of albums. The album starts with one song by the Von Trapp Family Singers, a decent version of "Deck the Halls" that sounds very aged and is by no means exceptional. Then the listener is treated to 13 songs performed by the International Festival Orchestra and Chorus, in reality a collection of choral songs, keyboard songs, and orchestral songs that do not sound like they are performed by the same group. There are some good songs in the bunch, especially the renditions of "O Tannenbaum" and "O Come All Ye Faithful," but for the most part they are pretty dull, with no real changes or twists or turns to capture the listener's attention. Then the album shoots itself in the foot by including Bing Crosby's rendition of "O Little Town of Bethlehem," which is so blatantly better than everything preceding it that it reveals how terrible the album really is. With very little keeping it together, Christmas Around the World is a pretty bad album that offers nothing that could not be found on a hundred other budget compilations, only performed better. ~ Bradley Torreano
