With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. The Strawbs' fourth album, 1971's FROM THE WITCHWOOD is the key transition point between the group's folk-rock roots and the more commercial pop sound of their later records, and is also the last to include Rick Wakeman's keyboards. This album was originally the weak link in the transition of the Strawbs from an acoustic folk-rock outfit to a progressive-folk band, being neither fish nor fowl and suffering from an anemic mix. The 1998 British reissue (A&M 540-939-2), however, solves some inherent problems that plagued both the original vinyl edition and the first CD reissues. The new remastering toughened up the bass sound, and brings out more of the sheer power of Rick Wakeman's organ and synthesizer playing, accenting the harder side of the group's sound that was obviously there in the studio but lacking in the analog mix. On his tenth album, guitarist Mark Elf fronts sort of a virtual quartet consisting of himself on lead and overdubbed rhythm guitar, backed by bassist Neal Minor and drummer Lewis Nash. The program consists primarily of original compositions, with a couple of standards and a unique but tasteful arrangement of "America" thrown in as well. The originals are almost all exceptionally well-written: "Dream Steppin'," Elf's take on the chord changes to "You Stepped out of a Dream," is intricate and slightly jagged, yet genuinely lyrical; the wry "Pregnant Chad Blues" is crafted in such a way that it's difficult to detect the 12-bar blues progression; "Rhymin' for Simon" uses a repeated phrase that crosses bar lines ...
