100% Motown '80s is a short, budget-priced compilation offering just a few of the label's hits from that decade; indeed, some might say that Motown only produced a handful of worthwhile singles during the '80s. Nevertheless, this collection offers some of that era's definitive tracks from the imprint, including Rick James' classic "Super Freak," DeBarge's lighter-than-air "Rhythm of the Night," Smokey Robinson's worthy "Being with You," and Rockwell's playfully paranoid, Michael Jackson-esque "Somebody's Watching Me." The Dazz Band's "Let It Whip" and "Nightshift," the Commodores' underrated requiem for '60s soul, are some of the other bright spots on the album. ~ Heather Phares

100% Motown '80S album
$8.75 Attitude, the second album from the California quintet Troop, featured four charting singles. The first release, "I'm Not Soupped," is the least credible of the four. With the title's rather doltish connotation, the dance number still managed to peak at number 19 after only 12 weeks on the Billboard R&B charts. The second single, "Spread My Wings," elevated Troop's national image. The song's vivacious rhythm ...
| | Bob James Joined At The Hip CD (1996)
100% Motown '80S CD music
$7.59 JOINED AT THE HIP was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance.
JOINED AT THE HIP features Bob James and saxophonist Kirk Whalum as a team. After several appearance on one another's solo efforts, James and Whalum realized that they had similar playing styles, and as James said, "were eager to explore that compatibility in a pressure-free environment, [while] keeping everything loose and fun." Given that attitude, the album manages to break away from some of the stylistic parameters typically found on contemporary jazz albums.
Whalum stretches out and lets the opening track, "Soweto," build over ten minutes. "Kickin' Back" is James' most spontaneous moment on the album, offering a laid-back and spirited jam. In addition to fine performances by James and Whalum, other fine musicians ...
| | New Edition Heart Break CD (1988)
100% Motown '80S music CDs
$6.49 This album marked New Edition's growth and maturity due in part to the production work of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and the addition of group newcomer Johnny Gill. The first single from the much anticipated album was "If Isn't Love." With its percussive rhythm and frigid keyboard effects, Ralph Tresvant applies his rigidly smooth tenor to this mid-tempo dance cut. The single peaked at number two and seven on the Billboard R&B and pop charts, respectively. The second single, "You're ...

| | Sergio Salvatore Point Of Presence CD (1997)
100% Motown '80S album
$12.59 Sergio Salvatore has the odd fortune of resembling child actor Fred Savage from TV's "The Wonder Years, " and that could have plagued the public's openmindedness towards taking him seriously as a major jazz talent, rather than just a cute novelty. Fortunately, deep talent has won out and the prodigy, now a teenager, has bloomed into a multi-faceted composer/performer. A true product of the 90's, he not only named his shift towards contemporary pop/funk oriented jazz after an internet term (Point of Presence being the point from which one leaps onto the world wide web), but he's sharp enough to figure out that he's bound to gain a larger audience by stretching beyond his straight ahead beginnings. ...

100% Motown '80S songs
$8.49 Mixing hip-hop, rock, and Latin influences, the music of this Oakland-based outfit is a unique and infectious testament to the rich rewards of our multicultural times. By blending the rhymes of the politically motivated MC Piper, the vocals of Southerner Steve Knight, and the Latin-spiced guitar playing of Chilean Dave Lopez, Flipsyde has concocted a sound that is at once familiar and individual. Tight beats by DJ D-Sharp round out the sound, making the group's 2005 debut, WE THE PEOPLE, a first effort worth acknowledging.
Rock-rap only seems to make it when it comes primarily from the rock side. Ask Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, or Vernon Reid. The kids like the swagger, they like the bravado, but they aren't so hot for the grit, at least not genuine grit that comes from ...
