| | Wishbone Ash Bare Bones DVD Audio Wishbone Ash Discography of CDs
Folk music always played a part in Wishbone Ash's unique style, along with blues, rock & roll, and Yes-style prog-rock riffs, but long time fans might be a little surprised by this set. It's Wishbone Ash unplugged, with nary an electric guitar on hand until the closing "Everybody Needs a Friend," to which founding member Andy Powell contributes some dazzling solos. The songs mostly have a strong Celtic flavor, with the exception of an occasional blues-based tune like "Love Abuse," which features fetching background vocals by undervalued British singer-songwriter Claire Hamill. Some of the songs here, such as "Wings of Desire" and "Errors of My Way," date back to the band's original early-1970s incarnation.

The beautifully remastered version of the Moody Blues's 1970 back-to-basics album (translation: they cut way back on the overdubs) strips away the original aural murk at last, and includes informative liner-note interviews with the band about the recording process. Standout tracks include the classic sort-of protest song "Question" and "It's Up to You," one of singer/guitarist Justin Hayward's most authoritatively wistful riff-rockers.
There is a clear attempt to pare back ...

Following up the energetic, one-two punch of RUST NEVER SLEEPS and LIVE RUST, Neil Young takes a more understated route with 1980's HAWKS & DOVES. On rustic tracks such as "Little Wing" and "The Old Homestead" (both written in the mid-'70s), Young revisits his HARVEST era with a spare sound that relies heavily on his distinctive voice and acoustic guitar. As the album progresses, its scope widens both musically and ...
