During the 1960's, Shelly Manne recorded at least 9 sessions for Programs, Inc., to be used by the U.S. Navy in its recruitment show, "The Navy Swings." These were recorded at United Recorders, in Hollywood and are all previously unreleased. This 23 sele

Personnel: Shelly Manne (drums); Frank Strozier (alto saxophone); John Gross, Richie Kamuca (tenor saxophone); Conte Candoli, Gary Barone (trumpet); Mike Wofford, Russ Freeman (piano). Liner Note Author: Scott Yanow . Recording information: United Recorders, Hollywood, CA (1961-1970). Photographer: Stan Levey. The music on this CD is mostly taken from radio shows in the series "The Navy Swings" performed during 1961-1970. Three different versions of drummer Shelly Manne & His Men, a top-notch hard bop quintet, are featured. The performances are mostly very concise (under three minutes), so solos are brief and sometimes only one horn is featured per song. However, the music is a valuable addition to the discography of such players as Manne, trumpeter Conte Candoli, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, altoist Frank Strozier, and pianists Russ Freeman and Mike Wofford, with four numbers from Manne's lesser-known post-bop 1970 group. ~ Scott Yanow

Navy Swings
$12.89 Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass instrument); Shadow Wilson (drums). Liner Note Authors: Larry Appelbaum; Robin D.G. Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik -- had it right on November 29, 1957, at Carnegie Hall. The John Coltrane on this date is far more assured than he ...

Chosen as the orchestra to open at all the stops on Frank Sinatra's final tour, Tony Corbiscello's 16-piece big band pulls out the stops on a play list of 14 tunes. There are also three originals by Marion Evans who also did the arrangements that are not only tasteful but diverse; for example, they don't all sound the same. Stocked with players from the New York area and driven by leader Corbiscello's drums, this album is replete with well-drilled ensemble playing as well as refreshing and timely solos. The session is further enhanced by the presence of A-one guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli on "Lover," "Dream," "Around Town," and, especially, "But Not for Me" played jam session style. The latter ...
