Mezcla, an eight-piece combo from Havana, joins the Khaeon roster with this hard-hitting but somewhat cluttered live session. While Afro-Cuban jazz and world music are the group's primary influences, the stinging fuzz guitar of leader Pablo Menéndez and the prominent, chopsy electric bass of José Hermida lend a flavor of Southern California fusion -- think Omar Sosa meets Tribal Tech. Carlos Santana, one of the group's more prominent fans, seems to have had an impact on the band as well. Keyboards, multiple horns, and of course percussion round out Mezcla's lineup, as they veer between energetic blowouts like "Isaías" and "2124 Derby" and mellower moods like "Sadness" and "Rumi." Tight renditions of Chucho Valdés' "Mambo Influenciado" and Cachao Lopez's "Buena Vista Social Club" are among the other highlights. ~ David R. Adler Recorded live at the famous 'La Zorra y el Cuervo' Jazz Club in Havana, 'AKIMBA!' is Mezcla's first "jazz" album, even though it has been playing Afro-Cuban jazz, the first truly international style of fusion music of the 20th century, since its birth in 1985. One of Mezcla's early supporters was the legendary guitarist Carlos Santana, the spearhead of Latin Rock, who stated in an interview with the San Francisco Examiner that Mezcla was his favorite band from Cuba. On AKIMBA!, Mezcla displays a spectacular breadth of musical styles and influences, from the classic Danzon Buena Vista Social Club and Charlie Parker's bebop evergreen Donna Lee to the funky Yoruba-Cuban chants of Hijos de la Mezcla and the fiercely percussive African fusion sounds of the title track Akimba!Led by its California-born band leader and guitarist Pablo Menendez, Mezcla has toured the U.S. and Europe several times in the last few years, and a U.S. tour in support of the release of 'AKIMBA!' is in preparation. Special guest is one of Cuba's most respected musicians, Enrique Plá, the drummer and founding member of Irakere. •' …a savory broth, concentrated to an almost overwhelmingly intense flavor … a must for those who are looking for more heat from their Latin jazz. ' -C. Michael Bailey, allaboutjazz •'Mezcla is the cleanest, freshest water I ever tasted. My favorite group from Cuba'. -Carlos Santana
Recorded at La Zorra y el Cuervo jazz club, Havana, Cuba in January 2002.

| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Akimba album
$6.29 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines ...

| | Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre Morning Song CD (2004)
Akimba album
$12.89 Despite what John Corbett's otherwise excellent liner note essay says, Morning Song marks the third time this current lineup of the Light has recorded together. There was a CIMP date called South Eastern in 2002, and The Moment on Entropy Stereo in 2003. The reason for making the correction is merely to show how seasoned this band is, and how wonderfully attenuated its voice is as a collective. Saxophonist Kalaparusha, tuba player Jesse Dulman, and drummer Ravish Momin have, as evidenced in this Delmark recording -- on which McIntyre returns the Light to the label after thirty-some odd years and other incarnations -- have become a unit with one of the most singular voices in the new jazz. With this streamlined lineup, where rhythm becomes the focal point onto which melody and harmony are not only executed but also discovered, the notion of song is what comes across most ...

(Fayetteville Morning News) Concerts begin with a simple "tuning" of the audience; from there a whimsical trajectory carries listeners through stories of life, love, and triumph over 'Murphy's Law."Jonas' original pieces are played on fanciful "industrial re-percussion" instruments made from found objects. He sings in a clear tenor voice; his guitar work is adventurous, alternately percussive and lyrical.
