THE ART OF TRANSLATION was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Gospel Album.
On their fourth outing, Grammatical Revolution in the Spirit not only comes up with the best Christian hip-hop album ever, but the Nashville duo delivers a Dirty South tour de force that only OutKast has matched. The difference between the two groups is that Coffee (Stacy Jones) and Bonafide (Teron Carter) ignore their Atlanta brethren's exotic P-Funk fancies (both lyrical and musical) in favor of plainspoken rhymes, driving bounce, and sledgehammer hooks. But that certainly doesn't imply that GRITS lacks innovation, as The Art of Translation has a sense of adventure that hip-hop's mainstream lacks. More importantly, the group's style-hopping is universally successful, seamlessly incorporating Afro-Cuban sizzle ("Here We Go"), metallic guitar ("Seriously"), and even angsty alt-rock ("Believe," featuring labelmate Jennifer Knapp on the hook) into big-bottomed beats with the help of mixer Serban Ghenea, who adds the hit-bound sheen he brought to albums from Jay-Z, N.E.R.D., and Musiq. Yet, great as the album sounds, nothing on it is more remarkable than the sound of two conscious and gifted MCs responding to hip-hop thuggery with marriage and Jesus, instead of a hopeless "reality" or revolutionary tripe. "When GRITS is hot they bubble," they note on "Get It." They're hot here, on the most potent antidote to hip-hop's parade of pathologies in some time. ~ Dan LeRoy

Bonafied and Coffee have done it again. They are the best of the best not only because they can rap, but because they let the world know that they are here to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Pettidee is good, but some of the things he says in his songs could turn away people just gettin' into holy hiphop. I would much be jammin' and rappin' to the Grits'lyrics in church than Pettidee. Pettidee shouldn't call the people of da Lord's freaks regardless of his childhood environment. I think Grits done the Lord proud on the other hand because serving the Lord is more inportant than soundin' good and keepin' up with the other rappers. All I gots to say is that Grits are keepin' it real. Fo Real Dawg.

Christian Hip Hop

I believe this is the best CD, yet! They have awesome lyrics that go to an awesome beat! Favorite song...Ooh, Ahh.

I listen to all kinds of hip-hop, but I'm suprised that I just heard of this group recently. I heard a few cuts off of Kazaa and decided to buy the album, and boy was I pleased. Unlike other Christian-type rappers, the grits are lyrically grounded in the essence of hip-hop, while at the same time lyrically motivated by Christian Morals and the uplifting of our people. Tracks like "running" and "video" highlight some of societies' problems, while "what do you believe in" offers a definate solution. Regardless of your beliefs, I recommend you cop it, because when it's all said and done, there's no denying good and positive hip-hop ( oh yeah, production is consistently solid too )
