The anticipated release of the American metal group's 2002 release; includes "Z Overture" and "Saturday." 2002, Japanese import.
With quite a few of the '80s-era glam-metal acts trying to come back with completely different approaches and styles come the 21st century, Chicago power pop vets Enuff Z'nuff continue to specialize in what they do best. And as evidenced by such latter-day releases as 2002's Welcome to Blue Island, they can still whip up a Beatlesque melody with no problem. The group continues to be led by the underrated songwriting duo of Donnie Vie and Chip Znuff, whose pop sensibilities are still keen on such standout tracks as "Good Times (Are Hard to Find)" and the upbeat ditty "Zentemental Journey" (which is preceded by a sitar-heavy Middle Eastern piece, "Z Overture," which is equal parts "Kashmir" and "Within You Without You"). For the hardcore fan, try to find the import version of Welcome to Blue Island, which includes four bonus tracks -- one being a surprise cover of Nirvana's "All Apologies" (after all, this was the same band that was almost single-handedly responsible for preventing the glam-metal scene from infesting any further). ~ Greg Prato

| | Megadeth Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good! CD (1985) Remix
Welcome To Blue Island music CDs
$8.15 After guitarist Dave Mustaine was booted out of Metallica in 1983, he immediately returned home to San Francisco and formed Megadeth. The new outfit was instantly compared to Mustaine's former band, and the comparisons haven't subsided since. Whereas both outfits shared such musical elements as muted guitar riffs and speedy rhythms, Megadeth's first album seemed to be more influenced by punk and hardcore. KILLING IS MY BUSINESS AND BUSINESS IS GOOD also saw Mustaine's debuting his lead-vocal skills.
Mustaine must have had a lot of pent-up anger to express, since KILLING is simply explosive from beginning to end. The brutal title track lyrically deals with a sniper who revels in hunting down his unsuspecting prey. Nancy Sinatra's hit "These Boots are Made For Walking" is redone as a blinding speed metal ditty. Other highlights include the album opening "Last Rites/Loved to Death" and the pro-heavy metal "Rattlehead." The album-closing "Mechanix" had previously surfaced-as "The Four Horsemen," ...

In the 21st century, it is not uncommon for one of the harsher black metal bands to boast that "no keyboards were used on this album." That is their way of bragging that they consider themselves black metal purists and are distancing themselves from the more musical and melodic bands that comprise the symphonic black metal school of black metal. But when Marduk recorded Those of the Unlight back in 1993, black metal wasn't as diverse as it would later become; therefore, the more abrasive and brutish black metallers didn't feel a need to tell you what set ...
| | Katatonia Brave Murder Day CD (1997) Import
Welcome To Blue Island music CDs
$10.65 Contains the full length album BRAVE MURDER DAY plus the bonus EP, FOR THE FUNERALS TO COME.
The first of two Katatonia discs to feature Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth subbing for regular vocalist Jonas Renske, Brave Murder Day is perhaps the most thorough and accomplished first-phase release from the Swedish death/doom outfit. The music is simple, almost trance-like gothic metal topped with Åkerfeldt's signature shouts and growls. Dynamics aren't exactly places at a premium on Brave Murder Day, but quieter moments on tracks like "Day" are a nice touch. These softer spots never really hint at the band's coming genre shift, and unlike later outings, there are no borderline alternative rock ...
