| He certainly was the "greatest" Too bad the man had to leave us so early in life. He truly was one of the greatest Jazz artist of the century. By dgleger (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) |
| Magnifcent performances and sound I believe this to be the best Evans set I have heard to date. His playing is magnificent. I've been playing it on audiophile quality equipment and the sonics are great! If you have the Last Waltz, don't hesitate to complete the set. By simons (Naperville, IL, USA) |

Marty Paich Marty Paich Quartet, Vol. 9 CD (1956)
Consecration songs This CD from V.S.O.P. reissues a fairly obscure Tampa LP featuring pianist Marty Paich (better-known as an arranger), altoist Art Pepper, bassist Buddy Clark and drummer Frank Capp; the music on Marty Paich Quartet, Vol. 9 has also been issued under Pepper's name. Pepper and Paich would have several notable collaborations during the next few years, but this was their first. Pepper is generally the main star (particularly on such numbers as "You and the Night and the Music," "Over the Rainbow" and "All the Things You Are") while Paich (who has several fine piano solos) contributes three of the eight songs to this cool-toned, but hard-swinging set. ~ Scott Yanow
Classic 1956 session, generally regarded as Art Pepper's first recording after being released from Federal prison for drug possession. Fearing the stigma, Tampa Records decided to release it under Marty Paich's leadership. Today, this is one of the most

Bobby Hackett Live at the Roosevelt Grill, Vol. 3 CDs (1977)
Consecration album for sale Digitally remastered by Jon Bates (Downtown Sound & Mix Masters).
In 1977 -- the year following Bobby Hackett's death at the age of 61 -- producer Hank O'Neal's Chiaroscuro label released a third album of material from Hackett's triumphant 1970 engagement at the Roosevelt Grill in New York. Titled Bobby Hackett Featuring Vic Dickenson at the Roosevelt Grill, the LP was reissued in 1999 as the CD Live at the Roosevelt Grill, Vol. 3. This CD contains everything that was on the original LP, along with four previously unreleased bonus tracks: "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Muskrat Ramble," "Someday Sweetheart," and "I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None o' This Jelly Roll." O'Neal had taped Hackett's Roosevelt performances extensively, so there was an abundance of material in the vaults. And it's a good thing that O'Neal had the wisdom to do so much taping, for the quintet that Hackett led at the Roosevelt was definitely among the finest groups he ever had. Joined by trombonist Vic Dickenson, pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Jack Lesberg, and drummer Cliff Leeman, the cornetist is in top form on such Dixieland staples as "Basin Street Blues" and "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans." This CD contains some new liner notes from O'Neal, along with his very cranky but honest liner notes from 1977, when he expressed his disgust with the many amateurish, straw hat-wearing charlatans who had been making a mockery of Dixieland and turning it into a parody of itself. O'Neal is quick to emphasize that Hackett, unlike such charlatans, played New Orleans-style jazz the way it was meant to be played -- with good taste, soul, and impeccable chops. Indeed, excellence is the rule on these swinging performances. ~ Alex Henderson

Cheb Khaled Ya-Rayi CD (2004)
Consecration CD music Khaled is the biggest star of Algerian rai, and a global superstar these days. But as his fame increased, the quality of his music declined. The raw, emotive style that made him successful in the first place was smoothed off and he became an international pop icon whose rai was diluted. This time around, he's confounded expectations by making his best album in over ten years. To be fair, it starts off tentatively with "Mani Hani," whose fake classical piano intro doesn't bode well for the rest of the track, but from the title cut onward it's a powerhouse. There's plenty of sophistication in the arrangements, but also a strong sense of rootedness. This is very definitely a rai record, flavored not only by Algeria but the entire Mediterranean -- sunny and overflowing with warmth. Khaled himself even plays accordion on several cuts. Good as most of the album is, "H'Mama" is the standout, with a mesmerizing vocal taqsim, or opening improvisation, from Khaled before the track really lets loose. But throughout the album there are wonderful touches in the Egyptian strings, slinky, funky rhythms, and great swathes of memorable melodies. This is a great artist showing exactly what he can do. ~ Chris Nickson
