$10.29 John Sturges's remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic THE SEVEN SAMURAI has become an influential film in its own right. A small Mexican village that makes involuntary donations of its harvest to a gang of bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach) decides to hire a group of professional gunmen, headed by gunslinger-for-hire Chris (Yul Brynner), to protect them. Despite the meager pay, Chris and Vin (Steve McQueen) sign on after the Mexicans see them confront some racist thugs. As they ride to the village, Chris picks up some other gunmen, including Bernardo (Charles Bronson), Lee (Robert Vaughan), Britt (James Coburn), Harry (Brad Dexter), and aspiring gunslinger Chico (Horst ...

$21.59 Approaching the legendary German classic 1922 film NOSFERATU: EIN SYMPHONIE DES GRAUENS by F.W. Murnau with his own unique sensibilities, Werner Herzog establishes a link between himself and the classic days of German cinema and in the process crafts a lush adaptation as well as a classic in its own right. Stark, symbolic cinematography and intensely stylized performances create what Herzog refers to as a different plane of reality, injecting the age-old tale of Count Dracula with a modern sense of mysticism, desire, ...

Telemann: Fantasies For Violin Solo / Rachel Podger
$9.79 RENEGADE is an ambitious hybrid of genres that occupies a liminal space similar to that of its main character, Mike Blueberry (Vincent Cassel). Building on the conventions of the Western and adding psychedelic elements and the sophisticated - albeit atypical - European sensibilities of director Jan Kounen, the result is a fascinating and compelling existential film about self-definition and the untapped regions of the mind.
The film opens with a teenage Blueberry (Hugh O'Conor), a recent transplant to the southwest from the Cajun territory of Louisiana. He quickly becomes embroiled in a battle with local bad guy Wallace Sebastian Blount (Michael Madsen) when Blount gets violent during a visit to prostitute Madeleine, for whom Mike has fallen. Madeleine is killed in the fray, and the injured Mike is run out of town, surviving due only to the kindness of the Indians who find him and take him in. Years later Blueberry, now played by Cassel, has rejoined the white folks to become a town marshal, but when Wallace, who had been presumed dead, blows into town, Mike is forced to face up to some demons from his past. ...

Telemann: Fantasies For Violin Solo / Rachel Podger
$10.05 Among the scariest movies ever put on celluloid, like its similarly styled sister, RINGU, this tale of death-by-curse is nothing short of blood chilling. With chapters named after each subsequent victim, it plays like a series of increasingly daunting, deadly vignettes. All of the stories surround a haunted house where the evil spirit of a 5-year-old boy still lurks. The first to enter the residence and be cursed is a young hospice worker visiting an elderly client. She finds the boy duct-taped in a closet, where he first appears to her in the form of a black cat, and then shows his ...

Telemann: Fantasies For Violin Solo / Rachel Podger
$13.29 "Cantatas for New Year"is a historic live recording of first modern performances of four late cantatas by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), the most famous (in his day) German composer of the Baroque era.The Washington Kantorei, an ensemble in the Washington DC area, was formed by Dr. Dale Voelker and Dr. Robert Petillo in 1993, and is dedicated to bringing unusual choral music for chamber chorus to performance. A particular specialty of the group is the creation of first performing editions from manuscript of Baroque-era works, followed by first modern performances of these works, often with period instrument orchestra. The performing editions used by The Washington Kantorei for this recording were created by Dale Voelker, from Telemann manuscripts in German and Belgian libraries. The period orchestra is led by concertmistress Risa Browder and her husband, cellist John Moran.Telemann composed more than 1,700 sacred cantatas, of which fewer than 150 are in print. His late canatas are of particular interest, because they bridge the gap between the late Baroque style of Bach and Handel and the early classical style of Haydn, C.P.E. Bach, and Mozart. In the 1720s Telemann wrote more than 70 cantatas each year. Though he explored other genres more in the next two decades, ...
